The Last One (Deluxe Limited Edition) (Vallendor, 1) [Hall, Rachel Howzell] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. The Last One (Deluxe Limited Edition) (Vallendor, 1) Review: Talk about twists, turns, and surprises... - Rachel Howzell Hall is a successful mystery and thriller author however, she is new to me. With The Last One, the first book in her Kai Megidrail series, she takes on the romantic fantasy genre. For me, The Last One had a very slow start. Told in first person, itโs the story of a young woman named Kai who awakens in a strange place, with no memory of who she is and someone trying to steal from her. She quickly discovers the thiefโs name is Olivia, but a misunderstanding results in Olivia and her brother Jadon being ordered to be responsible for her. When the town theyโre in is attacked, Kai joins Jadon in defending it. Soon Kai finds herself, along with Jadon, Olivia, and Oliviaโs friend Philia, journeying to find a sage and possibly traveling to the Sea of Devour, in an attempt to uncover Kaiโs identity. Along the way, they encounter otherworldly creatures set on destroying them, while at the same time trying to evade enemies. Rachel puts you in Kaiโs shoes, where you as a reader learn things just as Kai does. I found that frustrating because I wanted to know everything up front, but this strategy kept me glued to the pages. So much happens within the pages of The Last One. I think Rachel leaned heavily on her mystery writing ability. There were twists upon twists upon twists. Just when you thought you had things figured out, something new happened or was revealed. I found the romance between Kai and Jadon to be lacking, at least physically. They have great banter and the scenes between them were fun, engaging, at times a little sweet and endearing. You sense their attraction, but Iโm not actually sure if things went further than that. For me, I didnโt care. I donโt think the romance makes or breaks this story. I would have loved for the story to actually have been told from at least the dual POV of Kai and Jadon. There were many times when I wished I knew what he was thinking. The Last One contains a lot of action/fight scenes. These definitely made the story. The ending was surprising and has me anxiously waiting for the next book, The Cruel Dawn. ~ Favorite Quotes ~ โBe gracious. Thereโs always something to compliment.โ โIโll always listen. To be honest. I felt cheated. That said, there are several positives worth highlighting. Rachel Howzell Hallโs writing is immersive and engaging, even though the first-person present tense narrative isnโt my usual preference for epic fantasy. The modern language occasionally pulled me out of the story, but the author's voice shines through with clarity and energy. The main character, Kai, is a standout. Sheโs a no-nonsense, take-no-prisoners kind of heroine, and I enjoyed being in her corner as she grappled with memory loss, monsters, and complicated alliances. The story starts with a strong setup: Kaiโs stolen amulet, her quest to recover it, and her dynamic (if frustrating) companionsโthe charming yet vexing Olivia and her brother Jadon. The premise is intriguing, and the pacing keeps the reader invested. However, the repetitive battles against monsters felt like filler at times, and I found myself skimming through those sections. The plot is sprinkled with twists, though many of them were predictable. The last 20 pages deliver a rush of revelations, but they left me with more confusion than closure. The ending felt abruptโnot quite a cliffhanger, but not a satisfying conclusion either. I struggled to grasp Kaiโs overarching motivations or goals for the next book, which makes it difficult to commit to continuing the series. The romantic subplot also felt underdeveloped. While some readers might enjoy the โlust at first sightโ angle, I found it unconvincing and disconnected from the rest of the story. It read more like YA with angsty teenagers fumbling along. And I still donโt get โwhoโ the last one isโฆ Overall, The Last One offers a compelling premise and strong main female character, but the execution, particularly in the second half toward the conclusion, left me wanting more. While Iโm uncertain if Iโll continue with the series, I commend the authorโs talent and creativity, and Iโm sure others will find more to love in this unique fantasy world.

Great premise; Confusing ending

Fantastic!
This was great! I admit that this book first hit my radar because of the gorgeous first edition (and I canโt wait to get my hands on the copy I ordered!). Once I read the synopsis, I knew I needed to read this book! The story was just as good as I had hoped and I found it so hard to put down that I read most of the book in a single day. Kai was very likable, and I wanted to see things work out for her. As the story opens Kai is being robbed of her clothes and her amulet somewhere in the woods. She doesnโt know where she is and canโt remember who she is. As she tries to get her items back from the thief, she gets in a little trouble in town and must pay a debt before she can move on. I was curious about Kaiโs past and loved the clues each ability or memory gave. The story had a lot of action and it quickly became obvious that Kai knew how to handle herself. In a quest to find answers, Kai travels with the local blacksmith, Jadon, who is also a skilled fighter, his sister, Olivia, and Philia. They face one obstacle after the next during their journey. I loved that there was a lot of action to keep the story moving at a steady pace. The story kept me guessing throughout, and there were plenty of surprises along the way. The romantic elements kept me on my toes as well. I would recommend this book to others. It did so many things well. The world-building was top-notch, and the characters were incredibly likable. I canโt wait to get my hands on the next installment! I received a review copy from Red Tower Books.

That cliff hanger though - - - - ๐๐ฑ
This was a moderately paced read, until about the middle of the book. It picked up and got intense, quickly. There were unforzeen plot twists at every turn, with every character. The author wrote this with mystery and intrigue. Such great word building. My trust in each of the characters was always teetering and suspicious. My main suspicions took a left turn and left me just stunned and needing more. This book was a great lead up to the next part of the story. The ending has you on the edge of your seat with even more curiosity and questions. It ends on a DASH - not even completed. ๐ณ๐ฑ the epilogue was like here we go again, hold on and letโs go for another ride- - - - oh wait, weโre left on a dash and no news of book 2!!!! ๐ญ ๐๐๐๐๐ For those concerned there was no ๐ถ๏ธ, minimal, but interesting romance. But the plot was amazing!!

Detestable characters, but beautiful cover/page art.
I was really excited with the first few chapters of this book. It was gripping, intriguing, and written in a comfortable style. However as the story progressed it became a real slog fest. I found the protagonist so deeply unlikable & annoying that I couldn't make myself finish the book. There was also a romance, because, of course there was- and the dialogue was cringe inducing. Idk man, it's ... it's a book. It starts small and decently written and then spirals out into a very large and boring mess that doesn't really make all that much sense. The twists are predictable. The characters seem like people you'd block on your social media to make the place less toxic. Some people would probably love this story, but I definitely didn't. However, if you're into cover/page art - this book is quite beautifully designed. Really gorgeous. Great for a collector.

one of a kind
This book was refreshing in a fantasy sense. I definitely would not label it a fantasy romance though. There is really very little. A couple kisses. It feels very YA. I enjoyed the book and the ending of the book. My trouble was the 30-60% mark just felt so repetitive. A lot of fighting random creatures and searching for her amulet. Then a lot happened and explained in the ending. I feel like if some of it was spread out more the pacing would be better.. not going from mystery and excitement, but then slow.. to all the sudden all the reveals at once. I donโt know but the side character Olivia was so grating the whole entire book. Not sure if I will read book 2 or not. Maybe it will be better since a lot of this could have been story set up and world building.

The Last One
Wow what an incredible fast-paced journey! Full of monsters, mayhem, and mysteries this book was hard to put down from the start. Kai was an interesting character and I enjoyed her fierceness and independence. Jadon was mysterious and intriguing! I enjoyed uncovering his secrets and Kaiโs along the way. The story took so many twists and turns and the one in the endโฆ so good! I donโt want to giveaway anything but this book kept me on my toes for sure!! There were lots of tropes in here to enjoy like; mysteries, gods/goddesses, battle scenes, action-packed, quest, magic, otherworldly creatures, hurt/comfort, forced proximity, self-discovery, warrior protective MMC, fierce determined FMC, reluctant allies, morally grey characters, feminine rage, and so much more!

A beautiful book inside and out
I knew Hall could write a procedural whodunnit but this is completely unexpected. Keeping her sharp wit and masterful language of mystery writing, Hall has crafted something refreshing. Always one to evaluate how religion and belief are mixed into our everyday lives, some stirring questions are asked about faith and roles we all play. This book is a sea of emotions. I found myself laughing, angry, heartbroken, scared and hopeful. Now Iโm tired. I love the main character, Kai. Kai is as mysterious as much as she is bad-assed. Canโt wait to read more about this realm.
