Needs Minor Adjustment
I'm a musician and am quite picky when it comes to sound. Finding a perfect full hand size shaker can be difficult. Here are the issues with this shaker, BUT, are correctable. The shaker sound I'm going for, which is perfect in my opinion, is the shaker in Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith: [...]The large shaker is too long for the amount of steel bird shot it's filled with; should be less but wouldn't help anyway. The sound is too slammy\heavy, loud. The weight of the steel shot throws off your ability to obtain a comfortable, consistent, repeating shake pattern. I'm sure the case is the same for the smaller one model.Solution: I carefully and slowly flush cut open the unit with a miter saw, removed the steel shot and replaced then with just the right amount of tiny glass beads (AJM61215047) by Cousin Corporation from Wal Mart. I use black duct tape to close the unit which is nice for future access. Voilà, the perfect, smooth shaker sound identical to Sweet Emotion. Now this shaker is studio and live performance ready.

Great construction, just not a fan of the sound
Bought one of these sight unseen and should have tried one somewhere in person first. I wanted a big shaker for a big sound without having to mic it, but this one is just TOO big with too little material inside for the size. Construction is great, and it will work in a pinch, but the small amount of material inside the shaker makes it a bit of a chore to get a good sound out of it, as you've got to move your arm quite a bit to get a decent sound out of it. The 5-inch version of this is probably a better idea. Worth noting that the material inside this shaker is pretty large and coarse compared to the typical shaker sound I hear so often. I ended up also purchasing one of the Meinl "double barrel" type shakers and have had much better luck with that. Different sound for sure, but the mechanics of it are much better for me.

It's a Rhythm Tech Studio Shaker
I'd be really, really surprised if anyone looking to buy this has never used it before. Every high school band room has a couple of these. Every folk band, every church band, every world music band I've ever seen or played with has had this exact shaker. It does exactly what you expect and has a decent tone that's not tinny like an egg shaker. It's not a One Shot, so don't buy it if that's what you're looking for.

Was a real great addition to the tools me and my friends use for our jam sessions. Helped add an extra layer of percussion that was really missing from the music that we play together and I would recommend anyone who likes to play with friends to get one of these.

I like it, but it is filled with larger particles than I expected, giving it more of an african sound than a smooth sandy shaker sound. It's good quality though.

It's Plastic, but it works.
From a sound perspective, I wish I had gotten a metal one, but it works OK. Price is right, obviously.
