A great new biography on a little-known historical figure
Traditionally women have been given short shrift in American History. There have been few role models for young girls. Genealogists ignored female lines. Women were recorded only by their given names as the wife or daughter of some man. In the 1950’s Harriet Tubman was the first woman I discovered who did something important, but in writing the history of our country with a few exceptions, women’s stories have remained untold. That is why I am so thrilled by Mary Chiao’s slim new biography on Sarah Brown. Sarah was the daughter of the abolitionist John Brown and some years after his execution for his raid on the arsenal at Harper’s Ferry she came by covered wagon with her mother and sister to settle in Saratoga, CA. This book should be on very school reading list. Sarah Brown would have made her father proud. She supported her family and made a difference in her community. Hers is a fascinating story, and it has been carefully researched and documented by Ms. Chiao. Buy this book for your daughter, granddaughter, or niece. Buy it for yourself. You will not regret it.
