Still no luck with the guards. I've tried them both ways and the cat's hair is plenty long enough. Just doesn't cut at all. Any hints?

I have no idea. It works great trimming our horse’s hair. Sorry

Is there a trick to using the guards? Can't get it to cut with a guard on.

Make sure the tab on the side of the guard is clicked n place on the side of the trimmers. Also make sure your using a short enough guard

Can we use Andis and Oster blades?

No not interchangeable but you can buy 3 extra blades for cheep

can they be resharpened?

Maybe but honestly for the price of the blade versus sharpening it is just easier for us to replace them.
