good alternative to my Dawei 388d long pip black rubber
In building up another racket, I decided to try two new sheets of rubber. In place of Dawei 388D, which seems hard to find these days with a guarantee of the new ITTF-legal approval/logo, I'm trying out this Yinhe Neptune. It's been years now since rubber had to use the new logo/approval system yet the market still seems to be mainly selling potentially old, illegal/unapproved rubber. Fortunately, this Neptune does have the current ITTF approval/logo. It's not like I'm going to be playing in a big tournament where this is important, but I figured if I was building a new racket, might as well use fresh, new materials (as opposed to new-old-stock that's likely deteriorated with time). This rubber isn't quite as fast as my Dawei 388d with similar sponge, but that's OK, it's fast enough. I'm more after control and deception on the long pips side with only the occasional kill shot. I'm still getting used to it, but the Neptune has similar control and better spin continuation/reversal, so I'm pretty happy with it.The pips are slightly smaller diameter and further apart than the 388d, plus it's swapped the pips side of my racket from black to red. WIth my past experiences, the red color and the thinner pips means this will not last nearly as long as black, larger diameter pips. It's inexpensive enough for that to be no big deal. The only thing that knocks off half a star to 4.5 stars (rounded up to 5 stars) is that there is a slightly darker/duller spot on the rubber that you can see if you hold the racket to the light at the right angle. It's near the edge of the racket so it shouldn't effect game play even if it were to play different if the ball ever hit there. I suppose if I were to play a tournament someone might complain and an umpire/referee might reject my racket, but I don't plan on playing tournaments any time soon. So if cosmetic defects matter to you, take that into consideration with this or really any Chinese TT rubber not specifically QC'd for higher end players with the commensurate higher pricing (whether the various provincial/national team levels, or export market, or whatever designation you might find). As it is, I think it plays very well, comparing favorably do my Dawei 388d.
