Mary Berry's Complete Cookbook: Family Favourites with Perfect Results Every Time

I have too many cookery books and a couple of months ago I decided that enough was enough. Then I saw this in the 'coming soon' category and I thought that just one more wouldn't hurt. So I succumbed. And I'm so glad that I did. There are so many mouth-watering recipes here and the instructions are clear. I particularly liked the introduction to each section where some recipes were highlighted with a brief description and estimated cooking times. The number of vegetarian recipes was particularly welcome, but since I also cook meat for my family there is nothing here which is superfluous. I would like to think that I do not really need the hints and tips but I'm sure that I will learn something when I get around to reading them. They are certainly clear and comprehensive and, let's face it, Mary Berry has forgotten more than I will ever know. The book does not contain (as far as I have seen) a huge number of advanced dishes but there are so many specialist books on the market that that is not a great loss. If I have one criticism it is the size and weight of this book. But how could it be otherwise? I am about to order a second copy for my daughter before my eldest granddaughter pinches my own copy. She (and her younger sister) are becoming keen cooks and I cannot think of any better book to broaden their horizons. Do I sound over-enthusiastic? Please do not take that amiss, this book will not disappoint and I am sure that most buyers will come to regard it as a treasure.

I’ve been a fan of Mary Berry for many years and have the original edition of the “Mary Berry Complete Cookbook”. I’ve bought this secondhand copy of the latest edition for a friend from the Philippines. I see it as good introduction to the British way of cooking for her. She is thrilled with it. For me, the recipes are easy to follow, are simple and nine times out of ten I have the ingredients in my cupboard. They can be everyday meals but also dishes that will delight friends. A good all round cookbook for the beginner and seasoned cook.

Lovely cookbook

Well, what can I say? Mary just fails to let me down with just about every recipe I have tried in this book. It is packed with lots of traditional recipes which are great to feed the family - often leaving plenty for the following day's meal. I particularly love her classic lasagne (never again will I be buying the jarred stuff to create lasagne!!), the lime tray bake, not to mention her sausage bake. There are also plenty of healthy salad options too so it's not all heavy on traditional cooking. When I bought this book I wasn't looking for a baking book as such, but a good all rounder. It's perfect for just about everything I want to turn my hand to and not just a baking book of cakes although there are plenty of recipes for those too. So why not give it 5 stars then. Well, my biggest frustration is the way that many of the recipes have been written, but this is really nit picking. Ideally, if an oven needs to be pre-heated, I would expect this to be stated at the start of the recipe and not mid way through: Most recipes I read from other authors do this. Also, with the sausage bake, the recipe says to layer x,y,z ingredients which I do, then do this, then that, and then it tells you to go back and put other ingredients between the layers! It's just a little sloppy I think, and although most readers would go through and read the recipe in its entirety and finally create the recipe, I, like ,many others, would probably make the recipe up as they are reading it line by line. Okay, that's enough of the moaning. With a little forward planning or reading, this is a cracking book at a bargain price of £10.00. I've just bought a second copy for my sister for Xmas. It won't let you down, so do give it a try!

Having got the free Mary Berry cookery cards offered in the Daily Mail some while ago, I decided to see what else was available from Mary Berry. This cookbook is absolutely excellent having 494 pages, of which 448 are receipes. It is split up into sections by types of food for easy reference, and has a vast amount of meals (over 1000) for preparation. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. There is a useful information section on equipment, and measuring plus freezing, microwaving, herbs and spices and store cupboard ingredients handy to keep available. At the back of the book is a 14-page index for easy reference. There is also a conversion table for linear/volume/weight, plus oven temperature conversions including fan assisted ovens. As someone who still likes to work in imperial measurements whenever possible, Mary also includes conversion weights in each of her receipes. This book is thoughtfully put together, and is thoroughly recommended for either a beginner to try or for an experienced cook, as the choice of receipes are extensive.

SUPER DUPER!!!! and I'm not a learner cook. I have plenty of books to choose from in my kitchen but I am so very glad I chose this one. I've watched and admired Mary Berry across the years and I like the way she explains everything in simple terms. This book, although it only arrived about 2 hours ago, has some fabulous recipes which, if I hadn't just put a pie in the oven, I'd have dived straight in and tried one - something to look forward to tomorrow. People might (and have) criticised her for repeating recipes but as far as I'm concerned, this is a brilliant book; the photography is wonderful (the chocolate section looks particularly exciting). All in all a book well worth having and at this price, you're saving £15.00 which is yet another reason to buy it. Might make a good Mother's Day Gift??? (10th March for those who've forgotten!!)

Mary Berry's rich Christmas cake is the best! I prefer a recipe book to the internet so I ordered Mary Berry's Complete Cookbook. Besides the Christmas cake, It has loads of other marvellous recipes including some I have been looking for for ages, such as: Majorcan tumbet casserole and Nasi goreng. Very happy!

Great recipes, easy to follow with common ingredients

There are many, many recipes. You'll likely be overwhelmed at first. It's worth it.
