Tenerife: The Finest Walks on the Coast and in the Mountains (Rother Walking Guide)

Great buy, with a small caveat emptor
This great little red book seems to be the book of choice for hiking on Tenerife. The half dozen people we chatted to on our hikes last week all had a copy (though some had the German 2007 version). The book provides a lot of variety, in terms of easy/short to challenging/hard. The author is a bit of a power walker and his times are accurate for quite fit walkers. The only caveats are that occasionally things are a bit lost in translation (the German version is the original), which just requires you to pause for a moment and re-read the instructions. Also, as with any book, things change. So, the cairn or sign marking where to turn right may have been prominent in 2001 but may be gone now. Again, this added a few minutes to our journey but it was soon obvious and easy to retrace our steps. Incidentally, walk 24 now requires you to book in advance (unless you're lucky) and pay 2 Euros. Walk 49 (Teide) requires a (free) permit (for the final ascent to the summit), which you can get via email 7 days in advance. The hikes cover a lot of the island and as the weather can be 'four seasons in one day', depending on where you are, that's great for making spontaneous decisions on the day about where to hike. Oh, and if I had a pound for each time the author uses phrases like 'wildly romantic' or 'serpentine path'... :-). Buy it, use it lots and have a great holiday - I'd love to have spent another week there hiking.

Excellent walking guide
I loved to use this as a walking guide and I have done 6-7 walks from this guide. It shows the walks sometimes against the flow of the local sign-posting but there seems to be a reason behind this. The walk "builds up" to the highlights at the end of the walk so the wow factor comes last. The GPS downloads were extremely valuable as the signposting was not always clear or there were confusing overlaps with other trails. Could recommend to anyone that like to get away from the beach and drinks culture in South Tenerife. Proper shoe wear required and some really challenging walks are included that a non-experienced walker should avoid.

Great ideas for walks for the keen and experienced walker
Lots of great suggested walks from people who clearly have been there. In the summer months it's too hot to do any but the north coast walks, and even then you want to get up early to avoid the midday heat. But for autumn, winter, and spring walking, you've got lots of great ideas to go at in this book.Note that many of the walks are quite demanding. This is for the serious walker, not for having a stroll and a picnic. We consider ourselves to be good walkers and we found some of the walks took us quite a bit longer than stated. Each walk is accompanied by the relevant excerpt from the F&B 1:50,000 map, so that's handy.

Ok for big walks only
We were after some short and easy walks for our post covid lack of fitness which this book did not provide. It also appears to need a car or a good knowledge of the local buses to start points neither of which we had. If you are very fit, live there or have plenty of time then it would be no doubt admirable

Very poor directions
The book was originally written in German and I think some things may have been lost in translation. We failed to find the start of one walk as the instructions were indecipherable and on another walk the crucial last part was missing. Somehow managed to find our way after a lot of false trails. In the book’s favour it does identify some beautiful walks but a detailed map is required.

Useful book but comes with a health warning
I bought this book for a holiday in Tenerife. The walks described are rated easy, moderate and difficult. We tried circular walk no. 36 which is described as easy. However 'easy' is comparative and if you are an experienced mountaineer then you might describe it as 'easy'The first half of the walk up to the point where the guide takes you to a knoll (where there are fantastic views) is indeed a doddle, but you are then instructed to backtrack a few hundred metres and take a path to the left (the Camino Carrascogen) which we decided looked a bit harder. Having committed to the path we found it hard going and certainly not easy. Parts were steep, some very rough, some very narrow, some with steep drops to the side. With a walking pole, I only slipped once but had I been injured, there would have been little chance of help as there were very few people about and there was no mobile phone signal.Do not attempt this walk unless you are fit and prepared for a quite difficult walk. Having said that, the views were spectacular. The book does not have enough circular walks. Linear walks can leave you stranded in remote areas with little public transport to return you to your starting point where your car is parked.

The walks are great!
The walks in this book are great! There are lots of them, including some unusual and interesting ones. The timings are quite fast: I seem to do the same time as the author on a route that I know, but on a new route where I have to keep stopping to check the route it always takes me longer than the book suggests.Access details have changed for some of these walks (e.g. the Los Gigantes cliff/tunnel walk was affected by a tunnel closure due to a landslide) so it's worth checking the update page on the web before you set out on the more adventurous walks. The directions are reasonably good, but occasionally they suffer because they were translated from the German edition. The prose doesn't have the wonderful clarity of the Noel Rochford Tenerife book (from Sunflower Books).
