Necessary if you have a thick door.
If you have a thick door then you need this. Simple as that. We're remodeling an old church with thick, solid wood doors. Standard doors of 1 3/4" don't need it.

Don’t but the lock, but if you do, probably don’t need this
The actual lock won’t fit right, this won’t help. If you have a super big door (get a better lock and a pro), perhaps. No value for money, not function to fix lock issues. Installing was impossible.
