The Autobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr

Have only read about a third of this book but I have found it absolutely fascinating. To read MLK Jr's words describing his inner battles and those with the system that he confronted provides an great insight to his mind and to American society in the 1950s and 1960s. Superb.

A great book. I especially like how I was able to read into happenings of the movement, as well as into the life of Martin himself at the time. The way it has been written is fantastic & clear to follow. I've found this most informative in comparison to the documentaries I've seen before. Anyone can benefit from reading this, definitely lower class teenagers of today. At one particular point I broke down in tears, shaking after being hit with the biggest inspiration I've ever had from words. Reading this has truly been a life changing experience.

Interesting to see the upper middle class background he comes from, but also how many people suffered tremendously during the civil rights fight. A superbly compiled account that reads as if MLK had done it himself (effectively it is his own words). Some bits drag, but on the whole it enlightened me regarding the practicalities of passive resistance and direct action, and I shed the odd tear whilst reading it. A classic book which is a must read for anyone interested in the civil rights movement or civil rights in general.

This book is not written by dr king so Im abit disappointed as the way it is read you would think it was so how much of it is him? None the less the facts are all there and everyone should read this to truly show any situation can be overcome with the trust and love and god and truly living and trusting in the scriptures and to put ones ego aside.

Written as though King himself had chosen every word, this gives much needed insight into key phases of King's life, the Civil Rights struggle and his tremendous speeches. My greater understanding of the issues are thanks to this book. King's eloquence inhabits every word, extracting through vivid imagery, emotional responses. King was a great man who accomplished great things. This book is a fitting testimony.

Eye opening . Many important lessons to be learned here that are just as relevant today as they were then . Martin Luther King Jr must have been an amazing man , his words come to life in this book , I found it inspirational .

Very good book. I became fascinated by Martin Luther King after visiting his memorial in Washington DC and standing on the spot where he did his famous speech to the nation. This book is a very good read and so easy to digest and understand. Passed it onto my teenage son who is equally fascinated.

When I bought this book, I wanted a personal account of the man behind the myth. On that score the book failed to deliver. Maybe, it is because I overlooked the fact that Dr Martin Luther King achieved so much at a young age. He was only 27 during the Alabama bus boycott, was 35 when he received the Nobel Peace Prize and was barely 39 when he was assassinated. If he were alive today he'd be 78 years old, some 9 years younger than Dr Nelson Mandela. While the book is not a personal, touch-feely account of his life, it gives an insight into Dr King's intellectual development. I was fascinated, for example, by his knowledge of the Classics, philosophy, religion, ethics and the struggle of the newly independent African States. The autobiography paints the picture of a man, who struggled with making the "right" decisions but yet believed in the essential goodness of human nature. His conviction that non-violence was the means for Black Americans to achieve equal protection under the law, seems to have crystallised after a long, reasoned personal intellectual debate, drawing on the example of Mahatma Gandhi. Dr king's genius was his ability to inspire the troops, even during the darkest nights of the Civil Rights Movement. His personal letters showed his disgust with the so-called White Moderate, who, in his view, wanted incremental change for the Negro and not the kind of change that he was espousing. However, he was no starry-eyed prophet. He knew, for example, that for all the human compassion that striking may generate, it is dollars and cents that count. Hence, he knew that the Birmingham bus boycott would only bear fruit if it was targeted at the economic interests of the bus company. One gets the feeling that it is an incomplete autobiography of a great life, which was cut short by James Earl Ray's bullet that fateful day in 1968. I do not know of any really personal accounts of his life out there. Maybe the time is not yet ripe for peeling back the myth and revealing the man behind so monumental, and yet so recent, a change in American life.

This is about a great person who had chosen the Nonviolence as his weapon inorder to uplift the living of people who were oppressed for long years. It's about a great individual who didn't discriminated the society inorder to uplift a particular category of people. It's about a great human who had sacrificed his entire life for a particular cause to fight against the evil. The role he played in human history will remain forever. One can learn a lot for King's life i.e., inoder to achieve anything one has to be patience and show perseverance.

This is definitely one of my favorite biographies of all times, this biography tells the story of a reverend who tries to do away with problems(especially segregationist rules in United States) and the story of the Civil Rights Movement. I personally advice anyone to read this since it's an easy-biography and as you know it's very inspirational. It's inspirational because it(the Civil Rights Movement) sought to bring equality between all citizens without segregation based on color.
