Often disguised as something that would help him, evil accompanies Christian on his journey to the Celestial City. As you walk with him, you’ll begin to identify today’s many religious pitfalls. These are presented by men such as Pliable, who turns back at the Slough of Despond; and Ignorance, who believes he’s a true follower of Christ when he’s really only trusting in himself. Each character represented in this allegory is intentionally and profoundly accurate in its depiction of what we see all around us, and unfortunately, what we too often see in ourselves. But while Christian is injured and nearly killed, he eventually prevails to the end. So can you. The best part of this book is the Bible verses added to the text. The original Pilgrim’s Progress listed the Bible verse references, but the verses themselves are so impactful when tied to the scenes in this allegory, that they are now included within the text of this book. The text is tweaked just enough to make it readable today, for the young and the old. Youngsters in particular will be drawn to the original illustrations included in this wonderful classic. Review: Great update of a great book - The Pilgrim's Progress is my favourite book. I try to read it once a year, sometimes in its original versions and sometimes in a modern update. I liked this version because it contains both parts of Bunyan's classic Christian prose. It also contains the Bible quotes in full which deepens your understanding of the symbolism of the story and helps you appreciate that what Bunyan has done is give us an account of the Christian life firmly grounded in scripture truth. However, I don't understand why they chose a translation that uses archaic language when the rest of the book uses modern English; a better translation would have been the HCSB, the ESV or the NIV but that's my only quibble. This is a timeless tale, so helpful for all who enter though the narrow gate - Christ Jesus - and walk the narrow path the the world to come. A must-read! Review: Wonderful. - Here is the wonderful old classic, written in prison by John Bunyan, made easier to read by modernising the language. It is a great allegory of the Christian life and repays thought and meditation on its timeless truths. If this edition can make the book accessible to a new generation, that can only be good, since our society has lost so many of its glorious thoughts and values. Valuable to every Christian, it should be a must on every reading list. I did slightly miss the beautiful, archaic language, but instead the story took on a new immediacy.

A Good Read
It was in my childhood that I first read Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress in it's original 17th century English. Some of the characters' names and titles have stuck in my memory; such as, Mr Worldly Wiseman and Giant Despair. etc. This modern English translation is a very good read and a superb tool for all Bunyan scholars. The fact that it includes the Scripture references (in italics) as part of the text is very helpful indeed especially for preachers looking for helpful sermon illustrations. Highly recommended.

An excellent book
An excellent book which shows some of the problems a Christian may come across on his journey to heaven and which gives advice on how to overcome them. As each problem is illustrated and dealt with there are Bible passages inserted which is very appropriate and useful to help us to understand how the Bible helps us in our lives. The book is also written in modern English which is very helpful. Thanks to Amazon for providing this and other books instantly and free of charge on Kindle.

The pilgrims progress
I have known about this wonderful book for many many years. Now here I am at the age of 77, reading it for the very first time. Oh what I have missed along the way. If you have been tempted yourself, or even if you haven’t picked it up till now. You will not be able to put it down. You will be better able to deal with life's trials and tribulations and recognise those who are diametrically opposed to you in life as you prepare to defeat them in your search for the life in Christ hereafter. Remember it was written in the 17th century and has NEVER been out of print to this day. Read on I beg you.

Life is a Pilgrimage
Another book added to my library (kindle), at a very good price. It would be churlish to refuse...This is book 1 & 2, to which I added 3,4 & 5, all for the reasonable price of £0.99. I haven't started it yet, but will fit it in and hopefully glean some knowledge and understanding. That's the idea anyway. It is given a lot of plaudits, and I'm sure it will be worth the read.

Super
Das Buch ist gratis (als Ebook) und mit Illustrationen. Nachdem ich mir eine Druckfassung gekauft hatte, die ohne Illustrationen kam und mit einer erschreckend kleinen Schrift ist das hier genau das richtige.

Excellent for Reading During Camino
I actually read much of Pilgrims Progress while walking on pilgrimage from St Jean & Porto, back to Santiago. Any book that encourages good behaviour is a must read.

A Must Read!
Bunyan successfully gave a faithful account of a Christian’s journey. Many, if not all, of Christian’s encounters were highly relatable. The highest strength of this book (and what I loved the most about it) is its deep roots in the Scriptures. I do not exaggerate when I say there’s a corresponding bible verse for every other sentence in Pilgrim’s Progress. I was profoundly impressed by Bunyan’s extensive knowledge of Scriptures and his ability to infuse it throughout his book. Charles Spurgeon even called Bunyan a living Bible and said, “Read anything of his [Bunyan’s], and you will see that it is almost like reading the Bible itself. He had read it till his very soul was saturated with Scripture…prick him anywhere; his blood is Bibline; the very essence of the Bible flows from him. He cannot speak without quoting a text, for his very soul is full of the Word of God.” Not only is Pilgrim’s Progress filled with Scriptures, but it is also faithful to it. It gives a clear and accurate presentation of the Gospel of Christ, not a watered version popular in the evangelical world today. I also enjoyed the biblical lessons in every stage of the book. Even when Christian encountered troubles I hadn’t, I learned a few things that will help recognize the enemy's trap. And I also enjoyed the poetry/song Christian recited at the end of every trial. On the flip side, I found the book a bit difficult to read. I can easily spend hours reading a book, but for some reason, I couldn’t read more than a chapter per day with this one. Perhaps it is because of the different writing style or because it was written a long time ago. Whatever the case, it was not a can’t-put-it-down book for me. But it's probably for the best, as it allowed me to digest the material slowly. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the book. It made me reflect on my faith journey and examine myself. It also provided me with valuable resources to keep me on the true path of righteousness. For instance, Christian’s sole focus on God convicted me and made me realize I let myself get too distracted by worldly things instead of fixing my eyes on Christ. Also, the sufficiency of Scripture for all of Christian’s troubles inspired me. And I was enormously encouraged by how Christian and his fellow resisted a specific obstacle and the means they used to overcome it. My recommendation Pilgrim’s Progress is for the everyday Christian, as it depicts general things all believers can expect from the moment we have been regenerated to when we die and go to heaven. Therefore, I recommend all Christians to read it! Especially new believers. The book is so theologically rich that I cannot imagine any Christian reading it without learning something that will grow them in their faith. Non-Christians should also read it because it is an excellent introduction to the Christian life. However, as it doesn’t have much apologetics, non-believers who are skeptical but warm towards Christianity might benefit from it.
