Perfect for beginners!
Bought this for my dad as a Christmas present. He is a keen scuba diver and has been for years, but he has said this book is perfect for those wanting to move onto rebreather diving.

Easy to read
Easy to read with thorough information about rebreathers...well worth a read if you want to know more about the "magic" rebreathers.

A great insight that makes you think!
I bought this book to gain easy to understand information about rebreathers with a view to moving in that direction from open circuit in the near to medium term. This book offers just that and more.It presents all the information in layman's language that makes the content interesting, easlily understood and frank when pointing out the pros and cons. This book has already made me pause for reflection and question my motives for using a CCR, it will make you think about your attitudes to risk, discipline, training, technical maintainence, budget, your past mistakes and much more! It is most frank about the increased risk of rebreather diving, I like Jill's honesty.... Even if you decide not to go to CCR your knowledge of them will be much deeper and may come into use when others are diving them around you or other less experienced divers ask you about themI would recommend this book to anybody who wants to make an informed and conscious decision about such a large finacial investment.

A good in depth overview
I bought this book to get a good understanding of what rebreathers were and whether they were something I wanted to steer my diving towards. It fulfils this role admirably and deals with the various styles of rebreathers, how they work and what the advantages and disadvantages of them are. It gives a good overview of what is involved in maintaining and using rebreathers and gives a realistic view of what can go wrong. It does not set out to teach you how to dive a rebreather, or to replace a proper rebreather certification course (rightly so), but if you read and understand this book you will have a very thorough grounding to get the most out of a rebreather course, and to make sensible decisions about rebreathers and what you may be getting yourself into.Thoroughly worth reading - P

Good, but...
The author is obviously a very experienced diver, and it shows. The book is clearly written, is concise and well organized. There is a lot of useful information, learned from real-life experience. My main criticism is that pictures and graphics do not support and complement the main text. As example, there is not a single illustration showing the basic workings of a rebreather; many pictures just seem to fill the space around the text. I consider this a serious drawback in an introductory or "basics" text.In my opinion, is a very good book (it would receive a 5-stars review), and I would recommend it, but I do hope to see a new edition with improved pictures and illustrations.

Another winning piece of work...
Sat down to read Jill's latest book with a slight Jet-Lag Hangover, and everyone else in the house sleeping. I figured a few pages and I would be ready to get a few more hours of sleep. Instead, I read the whole book. Admittedly skimmed some pages but it held my attention from start to finish.Does it deliver what's promised in the opening pages -- a primer for divers looking to switch to rebreathers? It certainly does, and like so much that Jill has written in past books, I found myself wishing a book as simple and straight-shooting had been available when I started the move to CCR.It's difficult to write a "textbook" or an "How-To" manual of any sort, and although The Basics of Rebreather Diving does not pretend to be such, reading it would seem to be a great first step for any of you who are thinking about adding a rebreather to your diving toolkit. From the dangers of lithium batteries through equipment selection to dive procedures and failure management, this is a comprehensive study.

Clear, concise and educating!
Awesome book by an awesome author. I have dived with Jill and was amazed at what an incredible diver she was. It is very nice to see that she is also an awesome author as well. Things are laid out clearly and concisely and the book contains lots of useful information all in one place written by someone with years of experience but more importantly by someone who wants to use that experience to help, educate and encourage others.Useful reading for both new and experienced rebreather divers alike.

Good book but…
She provides a cursory overview of CCRs, but she misses important basic details for the novice. Moreover, the author does not include any in-depth knowledge for those that already understand the general concept of CCRs.

I purchased this during the summer of 2014 and thoroughly enjoyed the way that Jill covered the complexities of rebreather diving. The book is filled with fantastic information that provides a great entry level look into what rebreathers are, how they work, and how they can work for you as a diver. I really enjoyed the photos interspersed throughout the book and found that all anecdotal material presented was done so with a clear message behind it. Everything presented in this book was top notch. Highly recommend this one to anyone thinking about becoming a rebreather diver, as I was, or anyone just looking for an interesting read on a completely different approach to diving.
