Excellent for the beginner.
If you are a novice like me - this book covers absolutely everything you need to know and to buy. Written clearly by the author (who has his own brewing company), and easy to understand. Would definitely recommend!

Basic, poorly written, and very few recipes
This book follows the usual path of the hobbyist who writes a book. It's rambling, goes into massive amounts of unnecessary detail on the things he's knowledgeable about (hop varieties for example), and then is quite short on detail in other areas. All in all it offers a much lower level of insight and is far less clear than the average article you'd find online. Think there's about 4 recipes in each section covering a tight variety of beers. No Belgian ales or anything like that covered. Just bitter, stout, pale ale type stuff. No idea where the 'self sufficiency' element of the title comes from. You have to buy loads of specialist ingredients.
