Is the boiler made of aluminum, and does aluminum otherwise come in contact with the water?

The water sits in a plastic container at the back of the machine, I don’t know what it touches during the process. I love mine, I bought 2 actually and they both work perfectly. It’s the perfect machine for me, I’m not gonna but a full blown out machine and the nspresso just seems too commercial and plastic.

What size tamper do you use with this machine? 51 or 53 mm? It looks like the 58 would be too large...

The plastic 51mm tamper is adequate when using the pressurized filters that come with the machine. To get a dramatically better espresso with true creama, however, you need to get a non-pressurized filter (the pressurized filters do not product true creama). The Mr. Coffee 4101 (or equivalent for $6 on Amazon) fowrks well. For this you need a heavy metal tamper to adequately tamp the coffee, it should be a 49mm size. You can get one for about $12 on Amazon.

My lattes are cold. What am I doing wrong? The espresso is hot, but when I put the frothed milk in, it chills it. Steam longer and too frothy.

Milk drinks in general should not be as hot as other coffee drinks. Milk should be frothed to 140 degrees F, and if you steam hotter than 155 degrees F, you'll lose all the flavor of the milk. At 140 degrees F, milk is the sweetest. If you want to stop frothing, bury the wand completely in the milk to stop injecting air.

From your experience, does this machine produce a nice foam after using it for a while?

The airifier, which produces a rather foamy hot milk, can be removed. Using just the steam jet nozzel makes a much finer air bubble and hence, with practice, a much more professional hot milk suitable for making fancy latte art!
