Persevere and you’ll be rewarded.
This book started off a bit cliche but it picked up steam and gave me a lot of food for thought by the end. I’d recommend this for those looking to lead a team at any level.

Three great ideas that don't work together as one book
This was a frustrating book to read. As a follow-up to their excellent book "The Startup of You", the authors aim to shine a light on the new employer-employee relationship, and show how the paradigm has shifted to a series of "alliances" - short-term agreements between two parties for mutual gain. And they did a pretty good job of that - in the first third of the book. The second part of the book was on almost a completely different topic: network intelligence. The idea is that you should encourage your employees to have a broad and extensive professional network, because such a network can provide incredibly useful information. Then the third section extolled the virtues of a corporate alumni network, and gave some great, actionable advice on how to set one up, or get the most value out of it if you already have one.In isolation these would all be excellent, in-depth blog posts, or three great kindle singles. But as a coherent book it didn't really work for me - it felt disjointed and fragmented. But then, if you want to write something as a calling card for consulting business, you have to write a book rather than a series of blog posts. Also, most of the examples were internal examples from LinkedIn, which makes perfect sense given the authors, but it did feel a little one-dimensional. A wider variety of case studies would have been welcome.

Employee - Employee Engagement.
Argues for a complete overhaul of the employer/employee relationship, with the goal being that each make promises to the other that they can actually keep. ‘In other words, employees need to be networked and entrepreneurial without being mercenary job-hoppers, and companies need to be dynamic and demanding without treating employees like disposable assets’. Packaged into the useful concept of Tours of Duty. Full of stimulating ideas. Reid Hoffman, is the cofounder and chairman of Linkedin, which adds even more credibility to the material.

How career planning should (and will) be done!
I really enjoyed The Alliance! I found the concepts really described my career trajectory and planning. I had learned some of the ideas over the course of my career, but this book puts them into a concise package. Reid Hoffman's ideas are a combination of current best practices and a peek into the future. I think this is important reading for people that want a different approach to planning their careers or for anyone involved in other people's career development! I think the ideas are very powerful. I have purchased copies for the people managers that I know.
