GSI Outdoors Frypan, Lightweight Carbon Steel, Collapsible Handle Camp & Outdoor Frying Pan

This pan is great! I bought a bunch from REI and Amazon and this was the one I kept for camping. The pan itself is solid but not super heavy. We used it over a Coleman stove (the one you have to pump), but not an open fire. I see no reason it wouldn’t work over a fire, we just didn’t use it that way.The pan is non-stick if you get it hot (not warm, but cooking temp) before you put stuff on it. I’ve started using it at home for individual breakfasts and it still works great.The handle is great, but could be better. You squeeze it to rotate it into storage or working position. This also means you can’t squeeze it when pouring out contents or the pan will rotate. Not a huge deal.The other feature of note with the handle, is that it can be removed. It takes a little finagling, but is pretty easy after you figure it out. This is a huge deal to me as we were able to efficiently pack the pan and handle, i.e. nesting the pan with other pots.The only downside I have found is that when the handle is removed there are some sharp edges. I don’t think GSI intended for the handle to be removed, otherwise they would have finished these spots better, but a little sandpaper and/or not storing it in a dry bag would solve this.In conclusion: it’s a great pan (hopefully they make a 10-12”size next), and I would def buy again.

So far, this is a great little pan. We’ll see how it goes with the seasoning. I don’t anticipate problems though, this isn’t my first time working with carbon steel cookware.This is lighter / thinner gauge steel than my Lodge carbon steel pans - which isn’t surprising. These were made for the camping market, where weight makes a difference - especially for back-pack campers.They DO work on induction - which wasn’t included in the description.If, like me, you’ll be using them as an every-day option? - just mind how quickly you pre-heat them. Heat-shock can warp any steel pan if you aren’t careful - especially on induction or similar fast heating elements. The thinner the steel, the more careful you need to be.Learning how to clean, care for, and season pans (carbon steel or cast iron) has a learning curve. I tried several times over the years, failed, gave up, tried again… I finally “got it” though. It was worth the “aggravation”, as they’re so much healthier to cook with.It’s “just me”, so I use my toaster-oven to bake / broil - for most things.My usual frypans won’t fit due to the handles. The handle on this, being easily removed, was exactly what I was looking for. I can seer, then slide it in to broil, squeeze and remove the handle.I’m optimistic enough with this 8” pan that I went back and ordered the 10”.

got it for a hunt coming up and been testing it in my kitchen. so far, it's been a great skillet. heats quickly and easy to clean once seasoned.

Once this pan is seasoned, you can’t beat it. It’s great. It’s heavy duty and built to last. Wide enough base to be a frying pan deep enough that you could cook soup in it.

Good pan but missing the silicone grip handle that says it has which it doesn't! Disappointed so I will need to find a handle cover. Also the handle without the silicone cover sits in the pan which with vibration can scratch the surface of the seasoned pan. You pretty much need to add a paper towel or rag to protect the surface which if GSI had the silicone handle in the first place it wouldn't be a problem!!

I bought this for car camping to use on a camping stove. The handle is adaquet and I didn't have any trouble with it unlocking while cooking. I was surprised how it was delivered... just chucked in a bubble wrap bag. No sign of travel damage. I love the metal tone of the handle. A really elevates the look.The first time I used it was on my home induction stove. It was terrific on that, heated evenly and that sucker's bottom was level and flat. This is something you notice when using a glass stove top. Which I didn't intend to use it primarily for, but just saying it as a quality point. I cooked 1 lb of breakfast sausage 1/2 pound at a time in two batches. It was just the right amount to not over crowd and was definitely getting the browning I wanted with out burns or hot spots. Went a head and cleaned it and decided to cook some frozen french fries in a little olive oil, to make a frittata with the sausage and some cheddar cheese. The pictures say it all. After seasoning with two batches of sausage the potato didn't stick and the frittata released so I could turn it. Cleaned up with a little soap water and soft wash cloth. Use a nylon pan scraper to take a tiny spot of tuck on food. Glad I didn't buy the fancy 100 dollar one that weighs 1 and 1/2 pounds more. Couldn't imagine liking it more.

Heavy. Far from lightweight.Other than that, I'm sure it's great! Can't wait to use it.Took one star off because it's not lightweight like it claims to be. Awesome product though.

I bought this for backpacking. I was willing to sacrifice carrying the added weight to have a good non stick pan. Unfortunately, this thing is extremely heavy and I won't be taking it on anymore backpacking trips. It's like carrying a brick or two. I will, however, use it for regular camping as it's a really nice pan. The handle has worn a little spot on the pan from being carried with the handle folded in, but it hasn't caused a problem so far.

I bought both sizes this summer, mainly for camping but I keep the smaller one handy on the stove for eggs. Love these pans! Good weight, just right for me. Keep them seasoned and they're great. If not, the eggs will stick. I'm really enjoying the folding/removeable handle for storing or converting into a serving vessel. Would buy again!

⸻I originally bought this pan for camping, but it’s been so good that I use it at home too! It gives an amazing sear on steaks and perfectly crispy skin on fish. It does need to be seasoned, but the included instructions make that easy. Overall, a fantastic pan—and the folding handle makes it super convenient for both transport and storage.

Did the 1 hour seasoning steps in the oven and absolutely love this pan. I want the exact same one with a fixed handle for my kitchen, and would take a 12", both with covers while GSI is at it. The folding handle is pretty stable after locking in, tiny bit of play and the whole thing feels well built.
