Can you wash it on the laundry machine?

I wouldn't, with an agitator in the washer. Maybe one of the newer machines, on gentle. Ours has been through a lot, and I've had to stitch a small place on his back. I think that's normal with the roughness of small children. I am really satisfied with this purchase. I am planning on getting another for the newest grandbaby.

how soft is the elephant?

Very soft!!! My son has sensory issues and loves very soft blankets and stuffed animals and this by far is the softest that he has!

Is this an elephant baby pillow?

I would say no. The animals ears don't actually standout as shown, the color is off and the eyes looked dead. I would not recommend this product in any fashion but it is certainly not a baby pillow.
