Very Helpful
I've known about the Central Bank all of my adult life, but never really understood it until I read A Brief History of Central Banking. This was easy to read, which for a complicated topic is not an easy thing to do, kudos to the author Dominic Haynes. This gives a very thorough history of it's foundation and how it's changed through the years. It also gave me a better understanding of moving forward. With such unsure economic times, knowledge is power and knowing more about what runs the financial world, at least the Western world is very helpful.

No Depth
This is a simple book with limited depth. It reads like an extended Wikipedia page or an AI generated afternoon project. It contains few footnotes or references and contains limited evidence of research. It is at best appropriate for a middle school level of inquiry and at worst is a poorly edited waste of paper.

This book is great for anyone interested in money and the economy. It's a fascinating read and will certainly make you think more deeply about how money works in our world.

A brief and surface level light read
This book is good as a light read about central banking . However, the knowledge is only surface level and does not go indepth about the history of central banking nor financial history . This book is only useful for surface level reading. Its not a terrible book , just a BRIEF introduction to Central Banking .

Briefly, about Banking
Being a bit of a history buff, this was a good read about central banking-- a random side step in my usual reads in the historical realm. From ancient Europe and early days to the Great Depression. This book also touches base on conspiracies regarding central banking to practices in banking today -- just to give a hint of what is hidden in the pages.

Sloppy
This book reads like the work of an impatient undergraduate who has better things to do that polish a term essay for a good mark. It is reader unfriendly, using terms without defining or explaining them. It is full of repetitions. Shifts of style lead me to suspect that slabs of the book are plagiarised.

Poorly researched and edited
The author is a historian rather than an economist but that is no excuse for some of the glaring errors in this book. I started marking up my paperback copy with obvious mistakes but ran out of ink before the end of the book; e.g. claiming that Glass Steagall kept investment banking separate from commercial banking, despite the repeal of those laws over two decades ago, compounded by the fact that the text actually went out of its way to say that those laws were in effect “today” (it would have been bad enough if the comment was open ended). There is also an effort to spend a 1/3rd of the book talking about the Great Depression (again, the author is a historian) without linking it to monetary policy in any meaningful way. It read like an economic history book that was lacking any real focus - or time spent researching - and the author/published decided to call it a history of central banking because that may sell more copies. I don’t know who I could recommend this to when there are far better books (e.g. Bernanke’s “21st Century Monetary Policy” etc etc ad infinitum).

A mixed bag
A highly informative of the history and role of central banking but, at the same time, one of the worst written books that I have read in 60 or so years of academic life.

Trite, uninformative and poorly written
This book is a sad disappointment. Unlike serious history books on commercial activities and endeavours, or the histories of financiers, trade or financial bodies, this is a uninformative, shallow, uninteresting and poorly written collection of trite and obvious statements, phrased tentatively in the mistaken belief that this might seem thoughtful, and written as if for a 12 year old. The author has cobbled together facts and observations that would not meet the writing standards of wikipedia, and padded it out to book length by using a large typeface. For the first time ever (and I live in a house full of books) I'm planning on returning a book to Amazon, and if that doesn't work I'll simply bin it.
