"Flat" describes the angle of the bowl. It is not a reference to the finish, both styles are shiny. I purchased the tilted bowl and am ordering a flat version for water. Happy for your question! Wish I had noticed the flat version when I last ordered.

I believe this would work well for your Maltese. The bowl is tilted and holds just under half a cup of kibble, or 2.5 oz wet food. I use one for fresh meal-time water, too!
