On a dark, wet evening in Dublin, scientist and mother-of-four Eilish Stack answers her front door to find the GNSB on her step. Two officers from Ireland’s newly formed secret police are here to interrogate her husband, a trade unionist. Ireland is falling apart. The country is in the grip of a government turning towards tyranny and when her husband disappears, Eilish finds herself caught within the nightmare logic of a society that is quickly unravelling. How far will she go to save her family? And what – or who – is she willing to leave behind? Exhilarating, terrifying and propulsive, Prophet Song is a work of breathtaking originality, offering a devastating vision of a country at war and a deeply human portrait of a mother’s fight to hold her family together. Lynch's prose, delivered beautifully and lyrically, paints the pages with a chilling portrayal of a society succumbing to the tightening grip of a power-hungry regime. As the fascist government asserts control over key institutions, including the judiciary, police, and media, citizens find their rights eroded and dissent met with harsh crackdowns. The novel unveils a world where a false narrative of nationhood is imposed, and citizens are forced into awkward situations as the national anthem echoes in unexpected places. Brainwashed fanatics shame those who resist the encroaching right-wing ideology. The story unravels with a heartbreaking intensity, as Eilish confronts the devastating consequences of a government that devours her family members one by one. Despite the opportunity to flee the country, she steadfastly refuses to accept her husband's permanent absence, clinging to hope amid the turmoil. In the backdrop, a war between the oppressive regime and rebels ensues, causing a complete breakdown of democracy and plunging the nation into a profound crisis. As a mute world watches the televised spectacle of war and bloodshed, "Prophet Song" becomes a poignant reflection of contemporary times. The novel's haunting narrative and profound themes make it a compelling read, leaving a lasting impact on the reader's mind. A Must Read!
If grief had a face, hands down it would have been this one. I took more time to complete this novel, than I normally would. Reason being, every paragraph in this novel felt hauntingly ladled with grief. There is only so much of sorrow a human being can bear at one point of time. Inspite of it, there was no way, I could slam this book shut and shelf it. Based in Ireland, the scenario is about the authoritarian National Alliance Party coming to power and has passed a new Emergency Power Act. They have a secret police force Garda National Service Bureau (GNSB). But the author doesn't delve into the workings of this political rise. Instead I found myself in the living room of Mrs. Eilish Stack and her family. The horrors that I witnessed of this mother trying to hold the family together and keeping them alive, will stay with me for long. After her husband disappears, and the rumours spread about his abduction by GNSB, she weathers through all kinds of storms to keep her four children alive. It felt uncanny to read this at a time so much like our present times. With the war happening right under our very noses, the surreal scenes seemed all too real. Grief, loss, longing flood through chapter after chapter. The evocative imagery heightens every message that the author wants to convey. A literary fiction story that I was simply blown away by. A must read for all.

Precious account
Prophet Song is about the family, there is Eilish a protagonist, her husband larry and their 4 kids. Lives embarks when A “National Alliance Party” has recently taken control and passed an Emergency Powers Act in Dublin. Larry, as a frontline trade unionist, is in the government’s sights. A big demonstration is planned. Eilish doesn’t want him to go but eventually relents and Larry goes missing later on. Lynch significantly explores family’s perspective when government imposed Emergency Power Act through Eilish’s pain. I would say Eilish is carrying inviolable and emotional demeanour which is very impactful through out. Humanity is soul of this story, sometimes I felt this story is very doleful and dark, but Elisha's efforts and will to protect her family are so alive which put me in the edge of hope. At many places, the conversations between the family members or with other character are so touching that a sigh comes out of the heart and one feels that this should not be done.writing is so beautiful, the words and sentences are so powerful, writer precisely used nomenclature. Very very important important book जल्दी से जल्दी पढ़ लीजिये।📖

Not impressed
The story could well be of the times but I have been served with the likeness of it on so so many accounts either in the form of writing or visual narratives, that the book just read average despite the glaring human condition it describes in heartbreaking details. I don't really know if that's decadence in my character or in the prevailing times. However, the story of existence shrinking under totalitarianism has been told in far better ways. I don't know when authors gave up on writing books and took up writing screenplays instead. This actually read like a good OTT series.

Reflection of contemporary political dispensations
Excellent book and relevant to today's world where "authoritarian" regimes are gradually ruling the roost. And the last scene is poignant in its reflection of the deepening refugee crisis in the world.

Worth the hype!
The winner of The Booker Prize 2023 is probably one of the most hard-hitting and palpable reads of this year for me. Prophet Song is the story of the Stack family that breaks apart when the father of the family is detained and never returns home. This ordinary family lives through a dark phase of chaos where Eilish Stack, the mother of four children tries her best to hold onto every bit of what she has whether it’s her family or resources, which dwindle with the rising social unrest and unstable political climate in Ireland. Paul Lynch has penned an absolutely dystopian plot that reflects a reality for many, in the real world. The rise of a totalitarian regime leading to a civil war, loss of life, refugee crisis with descending hope and spirit are just a few broadly added elements that make this book so real. The presence or the lack of media and information, the true representation of events and international relations that could affect the situation and to what extent are penned as well. Often projecting a semblance that’s far from the truth. There’s grief and devastation and mind you a lot of it. Prophet Song is penned as a long monologue with even longer chapters that demand sincere concentration. The book is undoubtedly depressing but brilliantly crafted I don’t think it will leave my mind any time soon. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A mother's struggle to protect her family in an authoritarian state. administration.
Really moving saga of a family in times of difficulty. Exposes human ignorance and callousness of miseries of our own fellow beings in several parts of the world. For what is 'local' is truly 'universal'. Initially had to struggle with the disjointed communication style but soon got used to it.

Family first
Heartbreaking and devastating, this novel about the end of the world in our own backyard. It fills you with knowledge about living in war and becoming refugees when seen in West Europian scenery. It could happen to us. Tomorrow.

Highly recommended
Brilliant book. Set in the future but so much of the rise of totalitarianism can be recognised with the rise of the conservative far right in so many societies now. Beautifully written and constructed. Well worth reading.

Libro straordinario scritto molto bene. Indispensabile
