Agatha Christie's Poirot - Collection 1 [DVD]

An excellent collection of Agatha Christie's Poirot stories
This first individual collection set consists of the entire first series and the first three stories from series 2 (Peril at End House was shown on TV in two parts) of the LWT-produced Agatha Christie's Poirot with David Suchet in his role as the Belgian private detective Hercule Poirot, accompanied by his sidekick Captain Hastings (played by Hugh Fraser), his secretary Miss Lemon (Pauline Moran) and Chief Inspector Japp (Philip Jackson).I had seen many adaptations of the Poirot stories on the telly (particularly when they, the earlier episodes in particular, were repeated on a cable channel named Granada Plus, one that I still miss watching very much as it was one of my favourite cable channels - Granada Plus ceased broadcasting and was replaced by ITV3 back in 2004) before collecting them on DVD. Quite some time ago I saw one or two Poirot films (also on Granada Plus) with Peter Ustinov as the detective, but when having watched those I felt that his portrayal of Poirot wasn't quite a patch on that of David Suchet (that's just my opinion, of course).Still, this collection is a great start for those familiar to the series and for those new to it. Very highly recommended.

Suchet is a master of master--an iconic performance
The plot lines are well known but what makes this series exceptional is the supremely marvelous interpretation of Poirot, the qualities of the filming in terms of every single small detail: the lighting, the settings, the music, the total look of the each piece is simply marvelous. But ultimately,Suchet is so amazingly marvelous in his persnickety mannerisms, his utter portrayal of man who is a European through and through. Then against his arrogant, intelligent, European is his friend and companion Hastings--a sweet man who is so undeniably understated as the quiet Englishman steadfast and loyal. I absolutely ADORE this series. By the time I got to Poirot's Last Case I was sobbing, and sobbed all day. What a tour de force that episode was in terms of acting on Suchet's behalf albeit somewhat out of character in terms of plot line!!!! This series is utterly magnificent!!
