Versatil

Not as hackable as I thought
Yes you can do some stuff using a web browser and JSON. My biggest problem with this is that you have to take it apart to get to the USB port to program it. Then most of the electronics are mounted to the top of the rover. So to get to the USB port, you flip it over and remove four bolts and then remove some screws on the top and you can finally plug in a USB cable. What? That's not very robot... The initial process of joining a Wi-Fi network was terrible. The worst, and their documentation doesn't even get it right. The other thing is using stock firmware there is no ramping. The motors are on or off. That's a terrible oversight on the programming side and will lead to mechanical failure. The motors are barely able to turn the weight of the robot with skid steering. There is no differential steering. Motors are either on or off. This would be great for someone's first robot, it seems like there is some value to it, they really need a version 2 of it that is more for people that want to hack it than stick with the Waveshare ecosystem. I still don't think it would be able to turn at all with the added sensors available to bolt to the top. It's being returned.

Good starter rover but can’t handle much hardware
This is a pretty cool device although not well suited to our use case. We were hopeful of making this the second in a series of robots we’re building. It was unable to deal with much of a payload however - especially in regard to turns. We placed a battery, mini Windows computer, camera, and mic on it. Too much for its meager motors to handle. It’s now going to be a stripped down non-thinking rover steered by our primary stationary robot to gather video and sound for its purposes. It runs fine with just a battery and lightweight streaming camera on board. I would have purchased a more robust rover had I known.

Shockingly good robot platform for the price
This is an amazing little mobile robot platform for such a low price. It's definitely my go to from now on until someone improves on it. I wish it had more I/O and wish the default software was a little more extendable. Micropython OOTB would have made this perfect but perfection is always too much to ask and this falls short only barely.

Nice way to get your feet wet
This is a stripped-down version of the other Waveshare robots. Controller board is included, but no Pi. Just bare bones. Great for seeing if you want to invest more in their products. Also good for amusing cats :) BTW, their customer service is sorely lacking.

Bare minimum. Be prepared to put the work in
I have bought several Waveshare robots over the course of six months. And they all had one thing in common... They all have had something wrong with them. That being said, I'm starting to accept the fact that all the repairs that I have done to the robots is a good part of the learning experience of robotics. This little robot is no different. As others have said, it is a 'bare bones' kit, no cameras, no automation, no lights, just the minimum functionality that can only be programmed with JSON. But, for $99, not too bad. The top clear plastic covering did break on me though, so I now have to deal with that.

Good but not can be improved
The solid metal body is impressive. One of the wheels is a bit loose though. In general it’s good for this price.
