Great historical fiction read ⭐️x5
Thoroughly enjoyed this book! A real “page turner”, I lost track of time several times as I got lost in the story, with the characters. Nancy does a great job keeping the reader’s attention with character development, historical accuracy and visual descriptions. You can really tell she’s done her homework & takes pride in and is careful with what she writes. My interest was piqued for more information regarding the coal mine & convict labor that took place as I had never heard of this.. & if an author can get a reader interested in wanting more of the real life story by the end of the book I’d say that’s a pretty talented author & a really great book!

I would write more reviews if they didn't require titles
I will use a different style for this review. Because I don't want you to think I am prejudice since I live in Johnson County and Clarksville to Coal Hill are my daily stomping grounds.i don't believe we should rewrite history. Just give every side a chance to tell theirs and go for a balance.1) I love historical accuracy in fiction. This is. I know the author, her character and occasionally see her doing her research. I learned a new phrase last week, Easter Eggs. When a character from a previous book appears in this one. There were several delightful Easter Eggs interspersed in this story. NOTE: ALL her books are stand alone readable but there are several families that appear in multiple books. Basically she writes of one geographic area over a 35 year time period so you should expect some overlap.3) The wide variety of plot options, the possibility and choices, changing temperaments, moral growth or lack thereof.4) This is not a romance, yes there are multiple instances of people dealing with those feelings and making decisions based on those feelings that move the story along. But romance is not the reason for the story, history is.5) The Epilogue. It is placed far enough in the future you feel like this particular history is complete. But Nancy Dane also tells you just enough to remind you as long as the earth is here there will be history in the making. One story is finished but others are being written al around. She's already started on the next book. Now the negatives: in the author section it mentions how many children and grandchildren. It does not mention how close they are and the increasing number of community activity that Ishe wants to attend with them. These cut into writing time. On the positive side, her husband finally retired and can go with her to research and is available to proof read.I am ready for the next book.

History at its best.
Very intriguing and accurate, since I grew up in Clarksville it was nice to know more of the history before my time. I did know about the coal mines in the town of Coal Hill I didn't know about the prison. I highly recommend this book to everyone. Well done Ms Dane

Felt like Home
Although I have never lived in Johnson County, Arkansas some of my ancestors did and were during the time of the setting of this book. I easily related to the area. I admit to having bought, read and thoroughly enjoyed her other books! This book is based on real historical events but with the added interest of fictional main characters you grow to love and care about. The real tragic parts of the story were difficult to read and I hoped for justice to prevail. I didn’t want the story to end and I hope to read the next one soon!
