Shadow of the Colossus Special Edition - PlayStation 4

It's perhaps one of the most influential games of all time, back as a remake from the original ps2 release. Unlike the PS3 remaster, this version was virtually done completely from the ground up. The game is excellent. If you've played it before, there won't be anything new technically speaking in terms of gameplay, but Bluepoint games has brought this gem back to life for the current gen (and then some). The graphics and audio are some of the best I've seen. New and original control schemes are offered. This special edition in particular is fantastic as well. Love the box, additional items, and steelbook. Very cool for collecting. Additionally comes with some cool DLC items that don't change much in terms of gameplay (though do add minor alterations such as health regen) but do add some nice little aesthetic differences. Additionally, Bluepoint has went above and beyond to add in tons of filter and audio options which are just really cool in my opinion and add to the overall value. If you've played Shadow, you already know of it's brilliance: the gameplay loop, wandering the forbidden lands, and atmosphere are all some of the most unique and best in all of gaming. If you haven't, I would completely recommend it with only minor caveats related to a minor difficulty curve when it comes to some character/combat control and the fact that the entire game is essentially just you, your horse, a disembodied voice, and the 16 Colossus that you are tasked to defeat. I would recommend to anyone new to this game to simply pick up the standard edition. But for collectors or long time fans of the series, this special edition is well worth it!

I have loved this game since I was in high school. I always thought it was gorgeous and just an utter joy to play over and over again. Now, it's stunningly beautiful and just as fun. The controls have been updated, the voice acting is superb, I cannot say enough good about this remaster or the original game. So happy that my favorite game of all time has been treated so well. This remake was well deserved and I'm extremely pleased.

I really wanted to like this game, i really did. But man oh man...the camera and controls are some of the WORST in a game i have ever seen. Climbing the colossi will test your patience beyond its limits sometimes. Your character will flop all over the screen and then he will get oriented in the wrong direction and then it becomes a guessing game on what direction he is going to jump when you even get that far... I had fights that lasted a half hour just because the controls were fighting me. A fight that could have been over in 5 minutes becomes a dreadful slog and is not even rewarding once you win. Also, the horse controls worse than Epona in Ocarina of time. I think the horse has a death wish because he always wants to run off of cliffs, but the invisible walls wont let him end his miserable existence in this horrid game.

This game is a classic. It's been cherished since the day it came out, and the remake is excellent. I hope that Ico gets the same treatment some day. The graphics are absolutely spectacular, and the gameplay is just as engrossing as the original. However, the Limited Edition, while being a nice package overall, is not worth the ~$100 pricetag that it's now being sold for. The outer box that holds everything is sturdy and beautiful, with a nice design overlay. The steelbook is nice looking, not the best build I've seen though. There are only two small art cards included, and the map is quite small. It's nothing compared to the nice textured map that came bundled with Skyrim for example, though it does show every in game area on it. The stickers are a nice bonus, but once they're used, they're gone, so I'm going to keep them pristine in the box. You also get a few DLC items that boost health regeneration and a spotted coat for your horse; they're nice items for the game, but they don't change up the gameplay enough to make them really essential. Overall, it was worth the $50 I paid for it, but the price it's being sold for now is absolutely rediculous. Glad I preordered it before it was too late.

The game was beautiful on the PS2. Gorgeous on the PS3. Simply Breathtaking on the PS4. I've played this game countless times across multiple platforms, and it just amazes me how blown away I am all over again with this edition. The music is epic and glorious, the story is still solid and holds up well, and the graphics are a wonder to behold. The Special Edition for me was just an extra bonus, but I must say I love the packaging design. The steelbook looks great and all of the little extras are very cool. Also really like how it all fits neat and tidy in to the sleeve. Kind of wish the map was bigger, I was thinking about framing it, but I guess with the smaller size the frame needed will be cheaper to buy. Also love the stickers and how they look like the 'defeated' Colossi on your in game map. Might add them to the physical map to replicate the game map even more. Great additional feature!

My review is specific to the Special Edition. The booklet and other contents don't fit in the steel case.. they are just loosely put in the cardboard sleeve. The steel case is simple and nothing special it might as well be plastic. I like steel case covers when they look good like the Yakuza and Persona ones but this seems to be slapped together rather poorly. The game itself is great. this review is for the special edition contents.

As a collector of steelbooks the quality is very important to me. Out of print special and collector's editions usually don't come cheap and can be hit or miss when purchasing online, I definitely got what I paid for this time. Product was advertised as being 'like new' and it truly is. Very happy to discover that there isn't even the smallest hint of wear on the case. It's now one of the highlights in my collection. There are already plenty of good reviews posted here about this game. Specifically the special edition. I really can’t add more to the actual game review that hasn’t already been covered. Instead, I will touch on something that I haven’t seen anyone point out yet; the map and stickers! This is actually quite a clever bonus they included. The map in-game makes it quite difficult to view the terrain below because there are a bunch clouds blocking your view. This forces you to explore to find the correct path to a lot of the colossi. The physical paper map they include with this bundle, however, gives you an unobstructed view of the entire play area. The stickers had me wondering at first. Sure, they’re neat, but what’s the point? I’m not going to go sticking them on the fridge! They must have a purpose... well, of course they do. They just don’t tell you the purpose. They want you to figure that out on your own, just like many things in the game itself. These stickers are pretty much clear. If you look at the paper map, each colossi head is displayed on either side. The white stickers fit perfectly over these, perfect for marking the ones you taken down. A hit-list of sorts. The small, black stickers are perfect for marking the colossi locations on your map as you discover them. This was a subtle, yet brilliant, idea that many people might not catch at first (if at all). As others have said, the game itself is outstanding.
