50 Trades in 50 Weeks One year of good ideas, dumb mistakes, and timeless trading lessons Hi, I’m Brent Donnelly. This is 50 Trades in 50 Weeks . Over the years, many have asked me for a detailed, start-to-finish walkthrough of my process and framework for selecting and executing trades. 50in50 uses the business school case study method to go through fifty(ish) real-time trades in detail. The idea first came to life as a blog on Substack, and this two-book series is a permanent record of the weekly process that spanned from February 2022 to May 2023. Each week, I shared a new trade idea and walked readers through my thought process. Lessons include a wide range of topics like global macro, technicals, backtesting, correlation, narrative analysis, mindset, risk management, position sizing, and of course the psychology of successful trading. 50in50 lets you watch real trade ideas come to life in real time. Each trade goes from start to finish, touching on aspects like: Where did the idea come from? Why does it make sense? Narrative Fundamental analysis Technicals Pattern recognition Backtesting Positioning and sentiment Risk management How to choose stop loss and take profit levels. How to determine position size—What is the appropriate amount of risk for this trade? Psychology . How might this trade be ruined by mental errors and bias? The alternative hypothesis What are the risks to the trade and reasons it might not work? Pre-mortem as we imagine the trade going wrong and dissect the worst case before it happens. Data collection . Monitoring and tracking trades. Learning . What have we learned? 50in50 is a 1-year “Introduction to Trading” class full of new ideas, tactics, and strategies for trading. The books follow the trades over time and conclude with takeaways and the many lessons learned along the way. The target audience is traders with 0 to 5 years of experience , but professionals will find the series valuable, too.

50 Trades, 50 Lessons, Zero Sugar Coating
An exceptional and refreshingly honest look into the mind and process of a professional trader. This is not a "how to pick stocks" book. It is a deep, behind-the-scenes look at the entire trading process: the plan, the strategy, the discipline, and perhaps most importantly, the psychology behind every single trade. If you are looking for hot tips and stock picks, look elsewhere. If you want to understand how a professional actually thinks, prepares, executes, and reflects — this is your book.By documenting 50 real-time trades from February 2022 to May 2023, Donnelly delivers a compelling case-study approach covering global macro analysis, technical analysis, and risk management in a way that makes you feel like you are sitting right next to him at the desk. He pulls no punches, openly sharing not just his successes but also what he candidly calls his "dumb mistakes" — and those moments of honesty are where the real learning happens. What sets this book apart from the countless other trading books I own is how effectively it bridges the gap between trading theory and the reality of live trading. The discipline required, the emotional battles, the second-guessing — it is all here. I highly recommend this book for any trader serious about accelerating their learning curve and identifying the personal character traits that may be holding them back from consistent trading success.

How to think, act, think about it some more, and then act again
Journaling your choices, in investments or trading or anything in life just sounds so boring and tedious. But if you actually do it, even if you don't end on a private island, you'll start to understand how you think. Now, imagine somebody else went through all that work, parsing out 50 decisions in 50 weeks, and included their entire process for finding an idea, choosing how to act, thinking through whatever is changing that makes their initial thought and action right or wrong, and then closing the idea out? This is that book. Yes, Brent Donnelly is a trader, but he's also a teacher and a philosopher. This book won't tell you what to think, but it will tell you how to think. 5 stars, and even more accessible than his other book, Alpha Trader.ps. if a just-starting-out trader or speculator wants an overview of what a real process looks and works like, get them this book. The more advanced stuff can be found in Alpha Trader.

Amazing book! Must read for traders.
All the books by Brent have been an amazing reads. 50 Trades in 50 weeks was a great idea. It is been nice to see thoughts about trade ideas overtime and how they played out. I found tremendous value in reading/listening to his process on how he goes about trade ideas, position sizing and tactics. Never really believed in "trading books" but found this to be completely different as it was real trade scenarios and how he spots/pieces it all together.50 trades in 50 weeks is the third trading book I have read. The other two were Brents. These 3 books should be prioritized!

Tough read. Mediocre results.
Tough read. Mediocre results. Respect his first book though, also respect the guts to publicly journal your trades. Trading is a tough biz.

Author doesn’t use his edge in demonstrating trades
The content is free on Substack and podcast of each episode. I wanted to read this in a bound format. This author is not a retail trader. He trades forex at a bank. He doesn’t give any practical tools nor take aways such as spreadsheets he mentions to calculate his position sizes or risk and reward. He wants you to think like him but prefer to like his own words and over complicated topics to scare you into depending on him and his newsletter for trades. His other books might be better. But you can avoid this trading book.

Enlightening read, not all trades are easy or a winner
Read the 50 in 50 substack live each week. Great to see lessons from Brent's other books used in real life. Without a doubt has helped my personal trading. Now time for me to start writing.

Great book
What I really enjoyed about 50 trades in 50 weeks, is that it involves a lot of Brent's actual thoughts and reasonings for a trade, mixed up with some theory parts. There are a lot of gems that you can pick up and learn from.If you are considering to buy this book physically, I'd recommend the hardcover version. I got the paperback version and since it has a lot of sites, it tends to bend a bit too much for my liking.I guess it's worth the upgrade.
