This is a little bit smaller than I thought it would be and it is plastic. My grandson prefers the wooden railway trains. If you are just getting started with collecting Thomas et al---decide on one type such as wooden railway and stick with it. Do not get caught up in all the different varieties as I did! It becomes very expensive to branch out into all the various Thomas lines and your child will decide to only play with one particular series anyway. Best bang for the buck is the battery free WOODEN RAILWAY!
