If you are the kind of guy who prefers the obscure music (that is, the non-commercial kind of music...) then this is your collection! 17 brilliant tracks from the label (ie Soul Jazz Records) that has offered to all the serious music listeners music treasures all those years.. I've listened to that record so many times and i can't find any filler, just killer funk-soul tunes to dance and have fun with all day and all of the night!So, my marks are:COVER: 10/10! (what an obscure collection could be like..)MUSIC: 10/10! (Just listen to the 11 track and you'll get the spirit of that music!)BOOKLET: 9/10! (almost perfect)Don't hesitate and just buy that product!

It's OK

Compilations are usually a mixed bag, 3-4 great cuts and the rest can be pretty average. Not so with this fantastic compilation. Every song is fantastic, but my favourites are All The People - "Cramp Your Style", James Knight "Fantasy World" and Little Beavers "I Love The Way You Love" is really the crown jewel - soaring strings that to my ears were an influence on Sebastien Telliers awesome "Le Ritournelle".If you're looking for an album that will get you moving this will certainly not disappoint.

Gorgeous collection of soul and funk records you'd have a hard time tracking down otherwise. Perfect for some good loving, cruising downtown in the summertime or drinking mojitos on a cocktailbar near the beach. Great stuff.

Dès le premier titre, "Cramp Your Style" par All The People, on se frotte les mains: ça chauffe fort, ça groove dru. Soul Jazz nous sort encore une grandiose compilation avec ce "Miami Sound" proposant 17 titres très hot captés à Miami donc entre 1967 et 1974. Des titres majoritairement funk mais aussi d'autres plus orientés soul. En tout cas, c'est du lourd, du cru, du brut, du sauvage, du teigneux. Comme chez Motown, Stax ou encore Philly, les artistes présentés ici bénéficient d'un groupe de musiciens maison. Ce qui donne un son homogène et singulier à ces enregistrements: un groove élastique et caoutchouteux gorgé de soleil, comme un méchant chewing-gum trainant sur l'asphalte et qui se serait incrusté sous votre chaussure. De quoi faire trépigner des pieds et se frotter les escarpins. Pas de Betty Wright ici, peut-être l'artiste la plus populaire dans le genre et dans le coin mais on retrouve tout de même George McCrae ainsi que Gwen McCrae, Timmy Thomas, Helene Smith et bien sûr la légende Little Beaver qui doit être à la guitare sur un paquet de morceaux ici. Les autres sont moins connus mais valent le déplacement. Car tout est très bon ici, parfois même fantastique. On parle de seconds couteaux, soyons clairs, mais capables de torcher une pure merveille de temps à autre. Les influences sont claires et logiques: "Cadillac Annie" de Clarence Reid est construit sur le "Mustang Sally" de Wilson Pickett tandis que "You Got To Be A Man" par Frank Williams recycle le riff de "Cold Sweat" de James Brown. Bien sûr cela est très sympathique tout de même mais l'intérêt réside évidemment plus dans les réelles pépites du disque. Et il y en a ! Par exemple, un terrible "I Get Lifted" par George McCrae, sensuel comme pas permis. On trouve aussi l'imparable (et pour ma part grand classique) "90% Of Me Is You" par la grande Gwen McCrae. Mais aussi la version originale de "A Woman Will Do Wrong" par Helene Smith qui sera plus tard divinement repris par Irma Thomas quand Chess l'enverra enregistrer à Muscle Shoals. Pas rien, forcément. James Knight nous gratifie d'un torride et incroyable "Fantasy World", un funk proto-psyché de haute volée. Ailleurs, Della Humphrey livre une exquise ballade soul, "Don't Make The Good Girls Go Bad", irréprochable. Little Beaver n'est pas en reste avec son propre "I Love The Way You Love", une mélodie imparable pour un morceau entre soul et funk rehaussé d'un très beau solo de guitare très bluesy à la belle sonorité de type patte molle. Notons également un certain Joey Gilmore qui fourbit deux excellents titres, "Do It To Me One More Time" et surtout l'addictif "Somebody Done Took My Baby And Gone" et, franchement, on se dit qu'on tient là une bien belle compile qui regorge de titres chauds bouillants. Car tout le reste s'enquille très très bien, merci, le groove étant omniprésent et toujours bien envoyé. Alors voilà, si vous êtes amateur, vous pouvez vous dégotter fissa cette superbe compilation bien bluffante. Ca peut aider pour très bientôt: le froid gagne un peu plus de terrain chaque jour, l'hiver guette. Avec "Miami Sound", vous pourriez l'envisager plus sereinement. Pour votre retraite, par contre, pardon, mais là, j'ai pas la réponse adéquate.

Very impressive collection! This CD contains 17 tracks of quality soul and funk tunes. They may be "rare" and unknown to the average soul fun, but that doesn't mean they aren't good. Actually, they are great! Obviously, as evidenced by the music on this collection, there was a deep pool of soul talent in the Miami area during this period (1967-74), only some of whom (George McCrae, Gwen McCrae, Timmy Thomas) received nationwide acclaim. Those artists have some dynamite stuff on here, but the tracks by the lesser known artists also shine. The CD also contains a multi-page booklet with information about the Miami scene and biographical details about each artist. This is a superb compilation of late 1960s, early 1970s funk from Miami.There are not drastic differances in funk from different American regions from the time, but there are small gradations. This collection represents Miami funk as extremely taunt, locked grooves. There is no nonsense--not a lot of flurishes or jazzy solos as you may have gotten in the bay area--and there are some latin spices, obviously from the Florida demographicBut that means little. This means more: excellent funk. Buy it.
