GREAT LOVE STORY A SUPERNATURAL KIND
There are two supernatural themed films that are dying that I want to show. One is <ELECTRICK CHILDREN> and the other is of course this film <BIRTH>.I'm not talking about some ghost story like <SIXTH SENSE> here. It's something that is related to some kind of scientifically cannot be proven themed story that is so touching and original that I just had to buy it in dvd or bluray and watch them again and again. While people are hailing about the movie <ELECTRICK CHILDREN> they seems that they don't like or crazy about the film <BIRTH> or does not understand fullheartedly. Yes there are cult fans I mean a lot of cult fans out there who are admiring this film watching it again and again like ROCK HORROR FILM like. The movie is about Nicole Kidman who lost her husband by him having a jogging and had a heartattack. After 10 years, a 10 year old boy comes to the house and insists that he is her husband resurrected to this boy's body.No one I mean no one believed him not even his parents. But he seems that he knows everything about the lady and her husband's memory.Little by little she begins to feel sad that maybe he is her husband or at least he has a serious problem that he just wants to hurt her.I mean I don't believed the boy.How can I?Even by his look, he is all serious and all but he is just a kid yearning for icecream. But when Nicole Kidman is taking a bath, he becomes naked too and comes inside the bathtub to jioin her like husband and wife does. What can she do?Her fiance, she had a fiance, was crazy and even tried to kill the boy loosing his mind. Then he leaves her temporarilly.Life becomes upside down for Nicole. Then one day he figures out that he had an affair with this other lady. He was not all truthful to his wife.He was really sad about it. Then he goes to Nicole and says he was wrong. He is not her husband. He was wrong. He loved her like crazy but it seems that it was not. Then he leaves. He even had a mental treatment with his parent's help.Nicole got married. Then suddenly she realized that she was in love with that boy all right. The boy said he was not her husband because he was upset that he had an affair with the other lady. He was in love with his husband with all his heart. This is a great romantic film that is not a normal hollywood kind and some day it needs to be re-recognized.Actors are great, music is soft and tender, the cinematography, production design are all top notch.

Another disappointing reincarnation film
I anxiously looked forward to this film (as I do with any film about reincarnation) and saw it in theaters before it quickly disappeared. I was severely disappointed, as this film was very slow moving, darkly lit, and purposefully vague. All that adds up to one somber and moody film. I left the theater feeling very "blah!" and that's not how I like feeling when I walk out of a movie theater.Nicole Kidman's performance was outstanding in this film (despite her severe hair cut) and I thought she should have been nominated for the Best Actress Oscar (it is among her best performances I've ever seen). Her performance is the biggest reason why I may end up buying this film (I liked it that much). She plays Anna, a woman who is about to be married after finally getting over her husband's death over a decade ago. But when a 10 year old boy comes into her life claiming to be Sean, her dead husband, with convincing sincerity, her doubts melt away despite her friends and family's skepticism. The best scene in this film was the one where everyone is gathered to hear a musician rehearse the wedding march (which is the best version I ever heard of that overfamiliar piece of music). Its disturbing to see a fully grown man get into a fight with a 10 year old boy over a woman. Apparently, that boy was able to get under a few people's skin with his insistence of being the reincarnation of Sean. The bathtub scene between Nicole Kidman and the boy bordered on bad taste (I couldn't help but think of Mary Kay Latourneau--the teacher who fell in love and went to prison for her inappropriate relationship with one of her students). I did like Anna's proding of the boy as they ate ice cream. She asked him how he planned to take care of her. It was mildly funny, but because this movie is so slow moving and dark...it really does try your patience. By the end, we have reason to doubt the boy's claim due to Anne Heche's insistence that Sean had really loved her, not Anna. The ending leaves Anna completely heartbroken as she realizes that she made a serious mistake in the decision she chose.Since I've read over 20 books on reincarnation, I have seen a remarkable consistency about how reincarnation is supposed to work and how all of us can find out about our former existences and what we are here to do in our current lifetimes...but this film touches on none of those ideas. Its merely about a love that doesn't die after the death of a spouse...and asks if its possible for the love to continue through the rebirth of one person, despite the age gap. The film certainly could have been much better...the topic of reincarnation demands a serious undertaking. Unfortunately, this film is not it. They left it purposefully vague, perhaps to initiate viewers to discuss it in film circles...but they forgot to make the kind of film that a broader audience would be interested in seeing. I saw it in an empty theater with only one other person, and this film didn't last a month in theaters. Anyone who decides to watch it on dvd will understand why it didn't do well in theaters. Its a shame, because the topic is worth a serious film and the performances of Nicole Kidman and the boy are worth watching.

A different kind of nativity
Although I hadn't planned it this way (scheduled this film over a year ago without knowing what it was really about), this turned out to be an interesting, if unconventional, Christmas movie. Not in the sense that this was all peace, joy, and goodwill toward men -- which this clearly wasn't. The main theme was about processing grief/loss, and the hope that persists in restoring what was lost. That is the kinship I found with the Christmas story. In both you have a child who, despite all appearances, might be the incarnate answer to the greatest problem faced by someone. In the Bible, Jesus is the way back from alienation from God. In this film, the boy is potentially Nicole Kidman's dead husband come back to life. Maybe I'm stretching, but I honestly don't care. The third act goes off in a different direction, but the thematic parallels, however strained, are there. Anyway, there's my mini homily. The film itself was well-made and had good performances from all. And the ending was something more poignant than I was expecting from the director of Under the Skin. Quite a pleasant surprise overall.

Birth
I saw a clip of this movie on TikTok and thought it looked interesting. It was just very strange and off putting. There are some inappropriate scenes between an adult and child so beware of that.

A trip down into the reincarnation journey. A worthwhile movie that keeps your attention...

slow - bizarre
very very slow with no real depth into the characters' stories. Think of this a a glimpse in time with no explanation as to before or after. There's also a couple very uncomfortable scenes.

Will disturb, create tension, stimulate conversation
The story is not for everyone. For someone who is easily disturbed by the pain and awkwardness of human interaction, it will be hard to watch. For someone who wonders about the mystical quality of life, death and love, it will be hard to look away.I am in the latter camp. I've watch this over and over, and the subtleties creep up slowly but leave a deep mark. This was the first I'd heard of composer Alexandre Desplat, whose work here is intrinsic to creating the film's haunting but somehow still playful quality -- it's like listening to birds chirping to each other, so perhaps he took his cue from the opening line. The genius and medal of honor for bravery goes to Jonathan Glazer who co-wrote the script and, as director, coaxed unexpected - if not jarring - performances from the actors. Somewhere near the end of the first act, there is what feels like a 3 minute shot of nothing except the multi-layered expression on Nicole Kidman's face as she watches a symphony perform. Hands down, this is her most compelling film performance. She, too, was incredibly daring in this role.My only disappointment was that Glazer did not provide a director's commentary and, to date, has not put out another film. His first was 'Sexy Beast.' This is the guy who I'd want to sit next to on a long overnight flight from one side of the world to the other. He's got to be one of the most gifted and mysterious filmmakers to come along in decades.

A grief observed
I`m baffled and saddened by the many and apparently outraged reviews of this intelligent and ultimately moving film that I`ve read here. Jonathan Glazer should be applauded for all three of his films so far, this being bookended by his superb debut Sexy Beast and his latest, the astounding Under The Skin.Birth, with its fine, emotionally raw, sensitive central performance by Nicole Kidman, is a film for grown-ups, about grief and delusion. In no way does it exploit the actor who plays young boy who appears and claims to be Kidman`s dead husband, as some seem to think. (The infamous bath scene, for example, was shot in such a way that what happens on screen is not what actually happened on set. There are, naturally, rules about such things.)Glazer is one of the very few British directors now working - McQueen, Leigh and Winterbottom are three others - who are not content to trot out endless Full Monty/Calendar Girls/Made In Dagenham variations. Those kind of films have their place, and can be both fun and to some extent illuminating, but great cinema they are not. He should be applauded for pushing the boat out more than almost any director from these shores has been willing to do in recent decades. (How Michael Powell would, I`m sure, have approved.)This has an eclectic cast, including Danny Huston, Lauren Bacall, and the always excellent Anne Heche, but it`s Kidman who commands one`s attention throughout. She`s never been an actress to avoid a challenge - for evidence, see To Die For, The Others, or the more recent The Paperboy - and here she gives her all to a difficult role in an offbeat film. The plot is both simple and complex, and I merely urge the interested - those who are not easily outraged! - to see this remarkable, adult, thoughtful and thought-provoking film. It`s by no means perfect, but it is different, and very rewarding. The ending - which Glazer apparently couldn`t decide on until late in the day - is enigmatic, as is much of the film, but it`s pleasingly open-ended, in a bittersweet way.Recommended.
