Probably most useful for parents
I read this book because of a change of job and a need to know more about autism spectrum disorders (ASD's) in children. I was not as impressed as some reviewers. I suspect that this book is extremely helpful and inspirational to parents of autistic children, but those with a professional interest in autism might do better to look elsewhere. The book contains lots of good advice for parents. There are lots of lists. In fact the book seems to consist largely of lists, both embedded in the text with bullet points and also in appendices at the end. This does not make for great literary style, but I have to admit that it is very useful, especially when it comes to lists of publications, organizations, web sites and other resources. The strongest aspect of the book was probably its treatment of support and services - formal and informal - and how to mobilize them. What it lacked (and what I had particularly hoped to find) was a thorough treatment of the nature of ASD's in all their variety and degrees of severity, and perhaps more about the theories of their causation (though no doubt the book's brevity in this area is a reflection of our generally poor state of knowledge about autism). I would particularly recommend this book to parents, especially those whose children have been recently diagnosed with an ASD. It will also be of interest to professionals, policy makers in particular, but lacks the necessary breadth and detail to be totally satisfying to this readership. Still, if you want to read more this book has plenty of helpful suggestions.

Informative
An absolute gem! very informative, covers all the aspects of autism that concerned me and gave me such insight. Explains all of the abbreviations that I hear and has helped me to understand their role. I have learned so much in a positive way.

H.A.R.P - Informative
An informative book on autism by the parent of an individual with autism. I would recommend this book to people starting out in a profession where you may encounter people with autism. It is perhaps a little drab at times but still informative. - Antony Morris
