Well-written, well-organized, with many helpful specifics
This is a very useful short book giving many critical “take-home messages” for how to solve common problems of adolescence that are magnified by ASD. I particularly liked the sections dealing with the following subjects: focusing-down to root causes; changing oneself to modify others’ behaviors; how to respond to children pulling away; building trust; why some traditional responses don’t work with ASD children and how to best compensate; and how to hold children accountable in ways that really work. This book gives great advice on helping parents realize the reality of a potent conclusion: “ASD doesn’t become worse during adolescence; it simply makes the normal challenges teenagers face tougher to manage.” For all those facing this tougher situation, this book is a very good overview of what works in conjunction with the other usual solutions. Highly recommended!

This Book Delivers!
An excellent resource for families dealing with autism. The author not only identifies specific needs, he lays out exercises at the end of each chapter for both teens and parents to use to move forward in a positive and fulfilling way. These points of intervention help manage the unique demands of individuals with autism and encourage ways to achieve both learning skills and a happy life in general. The book is easy to read, yet delivers intricate knowledge needed to understand the nuances of this developmental disability.

This book provides practical strategies and a deep understanding of the unique challenges our teens face. What sets it apart from other parenting books is its tailored approach to autism. It's not a one-size-fits-all solution; it's a roadmap for parents like me who want to support their neurodivergent children in the best possible way. The insights and advice offered here have been a game-changer for our family, and I highly recommend it to anyone in a similar situation.

A Guiding Light for Parents
"Beyond the Spectrum" by Richard Bass is a compassionate and insightful guide for parents of teenagers with autism. The book emphasizes the importance of recognizing and reinforcing the strengths of autistic teens and provides practical strategies for supporting their growth and development. It discusses the need for fostering social connections, addresses the issue of overparenting, and highlights the significance of consistent rule reinforcement. The concept of radical acceptance and communication strategies for addressing language processing challenges are also explored. Overall, this book offers valuable guidance and hope for families navigating the complexities of autism during adolescence.

a helpful tool
This book uses a problem...solution model of organizing the authors thoughts, which is logical, but seems overly simplistic. It was refreshing to see that most of these parenting tips are the same or similar to general parenting advice given in non-autistic parenting books.

A practical, motivational guidebook for adults and children
It’s refreshing to read a book that talks about differences in children and young adults as a positive thing. It also encourages the reader to look at how they can adapt their behaviour towards certain reactions a child may have to a request, whilst learning about consequences of not completing the request, in a non-judgemental or unconfrontational way. I particularly like that it gives examples of scenarios, so you can see how the theory can be put into practise. It looks at reasons for behaviours and explains them clearly, giving tips of where to draw the lines of acceptable behaviour, and on how you can respond that won’t escalate the situation, while maintaining those all-important boundaries. It also contains exercises that you and/or your young person can do, many are things that you could do together, such as a vision board.I would say that many of the tips in this book would also have a place in any child’s life, particularly through the adolescence phase; I just wish I’d known of this book a few years ago! I highly recommend a read.

A Useful book for parents
This book provides practical and actionable advice for parents in their endeavor to care for their teenagers with autism. It focuses on strategies for managing behavior, fostering independence, and building on their strengths. I like the fact that the book presents interventions that parents can implement at home to support the work of their children in school. I didn’t get the feeling that the book catered enough for high-functioning autism but that does not take away from the fact that this is a useful book.
