How would i be able to prevent it from spraying me as well if i get close to my garden?

Walk up from behind the sensor, and switch it off before passing into the protected zone. It's an excellent memory test :)

Does it just spray in one direction? Not sure how to protect garden in the middle of my yard.

It sprays in a circular motion and It has an adjustment lever where you can control the direction of the spray. I have mine set for spraying 180 degrees ( half circle)

does it work well for rabbits and squirrels

We bought it to chase raccoons (which it does very well), and it chases the squirrels too. We don't seem to have rabbits in my part of Florida, but I'm sure it would work.
