Best sports massage text I've read so far
I first read this book when I was instructing sports massage for a massage school. I liked it a lot but forgot the title and author after leaving that school. Gratefully, I found it again after a bit of search. As a teacher, this book is my go-to when I need to review before a sports massage class, but it also has all the basics that you need for the PRACTICE of athletic massage.I am especially grateful for Pat Archer's treatment of how to deal with the various stages and grades of injury. Many books will not tell you what kind of work might be indicated for an acute injury, for example, but this text goes into the exact type of work that a massage therapist MAY perform, the benefits and the contraindications. If you are only going to get one sports massage text, this is the one to buy.

Great textbook
Went off mostly Ol Blue's review- it's definitely a great textbook. I've been practicing for 5 years now, and I'm currently an undergrad student for exercise physiology- this text has some of that sort of language, which is perfect for me. Clear, well organized sections that describe contraindications, functions of various categories of strokes, stroke mechanics, as well as more specific modalities such as myofascial release and trigger point therapy. Probably wouldn't recommend for someone who doesn't know much about massage!

Outstanding for working with the athlete.
By far the most authoritative text on appropriate treatment of ATHLETES. Pat Archer comes from a deep background in massage and athletic training. She includes "from the field" anecdotes to support massage as part of every treatment plan. It is clearly written and logically organized. Recommended for text for classes and reference.

Excellent, well-written
Purchased and read this prior to volunteering at an Ironman event (post-event massage), as a refresher on sports massage-specific A & P, massage goals and technique. Excellent, well-written, very useful. I recommend this book highly.

It's an excellent book, but probably too detailed for an introduction ...
This was a required textbook for my massage practitioner program. It's an excellent book, but probably too detailed for an introduction to therapeutic/medical massage.

Must have title for any sports massage therapist
I have purchased several books on sports massage therapy in the past few months. All were helpful, but this one is essential. The chapter detailing the specific massage techniques is masterful, and full of pictures and illustrations. Glad I read Ol Blue's review and purchased this one!

Therapeutic Massage in Athletics
This book was in fine condition and at a great price! It makes no sense at all to purchase such an item brand new when a perfectly good used textbook for a much better price is available here on Amazon.com. Thank you again, Amazon!
