A sad disappointment - poor workmanship and faults that are not "handmaking variations"
A sad disappointment.Where to start? -- OK, let's open the knife out...From the blade tip - blued on the tip from overheating when sharpening, an amateur's mistake.Down to the hinge - the slot in the handle is square at the base and pinched in at the hinge = grinds badly when you open it.I did about an hour's open and close, probably some 400-500 times - now it's a lot easier to open. The worrying thing is that the metal dust and tiny shards that came out were blade silver, not the copper colour of the handle-slot insert. That indicates the blade is rather soft (maybe only there at the hinge) - not good. The blade itself is bent - I understand that handmade means variations, I've allowed for that (the blunt back side of the blade is not square-edges but has a slight slant to it - acceptable) - but a 3-4 mm bend from hinge to blade-tip is not "variations".The handle back side (opposite the knife slot) starts at the base as level to the wood and ends up about 3 mm deep with the wood raise proud of it.And where all of these things - the knife slot bent in at the hinge, the handle back side not even - have all left little gaps all around, metal not fitting to metal, wood to metal gaps and tightness."You get what you pay for" - true, yes, BUT -- Opinel knives are less expensive that this and FAR better quality.Handmade does not equal "quality" - and this knife feels like it was made by someone who used to make paper aeroplane!Seriously - if this was "handmade" by a 14 year old in "Metalwork 101", it might have got him/her a "C" grade -- as an item for sale, it's a "fail".The good points? Well. it IS a pretty knife, the wood is a nice colour and it goes well with the copper bolsters and centre lines.I have my doubts over the longevity of the blade though.(Edited: Typos)
