What's Perpetual Motion Freestyle? Think of it as ''swimming for grownups''. The traditional way of swimming freestyle is designed to maximize speed in the short term but makes you tire quickly and increases risk of injury by emphasizing fast, shorter, powerful strokes. Total Immersion's Perpetual Motion Freestyle is designed to help you swim longer with more ease and enjoyment, and to allow for the easiest transition from pool swimming to open water. There is no more efficient - or satisfying - way to swim freestyle! Previous Total Immersion swimming DVDs have helped thousands transform struggles into skills, because they provide a rich visual guide to the key positions and movements of low-drag, high-fluency swimming. The Self-Coached Workshop on Perpetual Motion Freestyle goes a step further by teaching you how to learn, not just how to swim. Dozens of fine points and tips on how to avoid the most common missteps and increase your sense of clear direction are provided, based on TI's years of coaching experience. Whether you want to train for Olympics swimming or simply build your skills, this is a must-have for every swimmer! Review: It really works! - Not normally one to rave about things however... I have a sprint triathlon coming up and couldn't swim more than 6 lengths (150m) without gasping for air, I was really worried with only 4 weeks to go to the event. I thought £28 was a bit steep for a DVD (still think it is) but I was desperate! Watched the DVD in stages -taking notes for the key points and practicing them the next morning. I'm only half way through the DVD and this morning I swam 1400m in 40mins - less than 2 weeks after taking delivery!!! I love swimming. Terry Laughlin is a genius. I know this must sound like a paid review, but honestly I've never written a review on here before but felt compelled to share. Review: Good product to follow up reading the book - DVD expensive but has all the drills you need, working my way through them fingers crossed makes a difference, the ideas are logical and make sense.

I noticed 2 very important errors in technique I was making whilst swimming before I had finished watching this the first time. Changing the way I swam wasn't easy but it is a lot easier churning out the lengths using this relaxed style. I found the way the lessons had been broken down and presented helpful, but it would have benefit from having some laminated lesson cards inside the DVD case to take down to the poolside. If it had lesson cards or a bit on the dvd that said go on so and so website to download some for yourself, this would have been a 5 out of 5 purchase.

This is a perfect partner to the book.
I bought this DVD with the book of the same name and I'm glad I did. While the book is very informative the DVD gives you the additional visual aid which made it much easier to understand some of the concepts in the book.

Excellent book. Took my husband from a not very good swimmer to someone that can do many more laps with ease simply by following the simple instructions laid out in the book.

Hard to review...
I totally bought into the idea of this. Tried it for 7 ish swims and saw some improvement, now I dont have the time. Here are the challenges: 1. The DVD doesnt have a booklet. You have to go on line and print one. Which doesnt match to the DVD perfectly! 2. There is, in my view, a huge amount of info and detail to remember from the lessions. They should provide laminated tips sheets... what are users meant to do, take a laptop or dvd to their local pool! That really is my key issue, unless you have a perfect visual memory, recalling everything that Terry teaches is very hard 3. The DVD doesnt explain clearly how long you should expect to do each session for. So this could be the best ever swim coach option ever, but buyer beware and consider those rather obvious points above that I didnt consider!

Good, but not the best in the series
I'd have benefited more from a video with a lot of swimming from several underwater angles and commentary. Yet, it's a good buy and I keep returning to it, even now when I'm an experienced swimmer. The technical quality leaves a lot to wish for. (Tip: for making turns, find the excellent series by goswim098 on YouTube (there is also a few good clips of people showing off some of the TI-stuff)). My copy (from movie-mars) was dispatched long after ordering, and delivery to Europe from the US was also ridicuosly slow.

When I started competing in triathlons I needed to relearn how to swim. The Total Immersion method is so smart. You can shave a lot of time off your PR, enjoy the swim segment and swim with ease. This manual gets you started and was very helpful.

The Total Immersion Swimming Program completely transformed my swimming and made it effortless.

I got this video because the ideas behind it spoke to my problems. I'm in pretty good shape, took some traditional swim lessons, then couldn't figure out why I got exhausted after only 50 yards of swimming. Total Immersion is not only a radically different method of teaching, it's based on a radically different understanding of where the propulsive power of freestyle swimming comes from: i.e., from the core muscles, rather than the arms and legs. The exercises in the video are clearly explained and justified, well suited for self-study at your own pace. I do see one fault with this video: although it covers all the exercises you need in order to do the freestyle well and with minimumn energy, it does not make clear the difference in some cases between what you do during the drills and what you do when you actually swim. I would also note that people learn at different paces. For some, this method immediately "unlocks" the secret of effortless, long-distance swimming. For others (me, for example), the road will be longer and will require more patient drilling, particularly to attain the balance in the water that is the essential prerequisite to swimming effortlessly. I think any swimmer should be able to benefit from this video, particularly if your learning method is oriented toward patient, focused practice of technique.
