Is this really large enough for two kids to use at same time?

I'm sorry, but I can't answer that as it was a birthday gift for a great-niece.

Is it a good idea to take the doodle mat to a plane or a restaurant? Or is it too big to carry with?

Definitely too big for either. I would look into a travel sized one for a restaurant. Not sure if there would be an issues with using on a plane since the 'markers' have to be filled with water to work.

How many pens does the doodle mat set have?

They have 4. I will say that the tops were a little difficult to get off to add the water. Other than that its a cute little mat.

does the marker write on furniture..or if the marker goes off the mat and onto the rug? will it write on the rug?

We received this has a gift for our two year old. We love it!! It really is a magic mat! There is no mess! It is so much fun for the whole family!! It is easy to use and clean up! The mat and "pens" are great quality. The mat is easy to draw on and the drawings stay for a few minutes until they fade.

Perfect coloring gift! Easy to clean if something is spilt on it! The kids have already broken the stencils that come with it but they are 2 & 4 but the water markers work perfectly
