Worth knowing: In 1970, there were only five yellow strelitzia to be found in South Africa. The rarely found and extremely decorative plant immediately creates a Tropical flair. Instead of orange, the 3 flowering leaves are of golden yellow colour. The leaves are slimmer with the plant able to grow 1 to 1,50 in height. In honour of Nelson Mandela the plant was named “Mandela's Gold“ in 1996. Only with the crossing of 2 yellow flowering strelitzia was it possible to obtain seeds that would generate 100% yellow flowering birds of paradise. Today, the plants are even pollinated manually in a small plant breeding business in South Africa. Given good conditions, the easy to care for strelitzia is flowering after 3 years.

Origin: The strelitzia is indigenous to South Africa.

Propagation: The seeds can be started indoors at any time throughout the year. Cultivation is simple, however, a bit lengthy. The seeds germinate slowly. 50% of the seeds often germinate after 4-8 weeks with latecomers appearing after 6-7 months. Pre-treatment of the seeds is recommended. Remove the orange pieces of fluff from the seeds, scald them with hot water and leave them to soak in water for 48 hours afterwards.

Place / Light: Since its leaves will get burned when exposed to full sun, young plants prefer partially shaded positions.

Care: Because of its strong root growth, the streletzia requires bigger containers right from the start. Standard soil with a good drainage is ideal. Water plenty during summer and provide the plant with universal or tub plant fertilizer every 2 weeks from April until October.

Winter period: The winter location should be bright, with temperatures between 8° and 20°C.
