PLANE778 No.778 Rebate Plane

I loooove this plane; I've used old 778's and they've always been a treat to use, and this one doesn't disappoint at all, and it made me so happy to add it to my collection! I've used this plane to cut rabbets in birch, maple, walnut, fir, hemlock and white oak and have had no issues with any of them at all. After properly setting it up (including sharpening the blade and alignment/cleaning of the plane, as it ships as most planes do in a cosmoline-like coating) it keeps a consistent depth of cut, cuts very smoothly and has not once needed to be sharpened yet, which suggests the iron is a pretty good quality as I've run a lot of linear feet through the plane already.If you need a rabbet/shoulder/moving fillister plane, this should fit the bill nicely, ESPECIALLY for such a low cost.

I found it well made and useful, however my item came with parts missing of which I'm still waiting for. Outside of that it works well enough.

This plane arrived without the scoring wheel needed to work cross grain and with one of the fence alignment pins bent. Furthermore, the debth stop groove came filled with thick globs of paint that prevent it from sitting straight. I would not buy this again.

I previously ordered the Stanley rabbet plane and wound up sending two back. Host of problems from poor machining. This one made in England is much better. Iy has two posts for the fence, the sole was flat, the blade just needed minor touching upand it performed well. Blade adjustment is easy and it came in a wooden case. It cam out to be almost the same cost of the Chinese Stanley even without free shipping.

The plane itself is nice. Very sturdy and comfortable to use. However the blade chipped on the first use on red oak 1/2 stock in the worst possible place. Im sure between a grinder and a stone i can restore it. The wooden box it comes with arrived damaged and the cardboard box was destroyed. It seems likely to be a shipping problem. Other then the blade the tool is in fine shape.

Finally got, plane was ok but the storage box was smashed to bits. Plane undamaged.

Out of the box this plane was useless. The first major problem was that the plane iron was not square with the body of the plane. I had to file paint and casting lumps from the seat where the iron makes contact with the plane. Second, the iron needed to be completely resharpened to make the bevel perpendicular to the side of the iron that seats against the plane. Third, the slot in the iron for the microadjust needed to be widened since it did not fit over the wheel and this interfered with the proper seating of the iron and made it impossible to adjust. Fourth, I added a wooden fence to help keep the plane registered with the work piece. Finally, I filed down the front edge of the frog because chips of wood jammed up against it very tightly.The plane works great now but only after much modification. I may have been better off refurbishing an old Stanley or Record.
