Piotr Anderszewski: Unquiet Traveller

This film is a gem. The photography is spare, the scenery is often bleak (it's winter, after all), but Mr. Anderszewski is a thoughtful musician, and I could listen to his thoughts all day. I am, of course, deeply envious of the fact that he can take his piano with him on a train, so that he can practice as he's getting from A to B...what a luxury that would be! You feel that you are sitting in on private sessions when he's practicing, or playing a piece with his violinist sister. A very personal story, intimately told.

So who expect a very good young pianist to not be pretentious? But there's substance to his approach and style, and some weird poetry to his train trip. The musical excerpts should have been more substantial, but he certainly plays beautifully. I will probably watch again.

I can scarcely remember when I've had a better musical and visual experience with a film. Perhaps I started with an advantage: I love trains. The idea of Anderszewski with his Steinway grand, in a perfectly appointed railway car, tootling through Europe and eastern Europe, recitals along the way, practising and demonstrating at the piano on the train, chatting intelligently about music and composers, wonderfully photographed and edited by Monsaingeon--this was as close to filmic heaven as I expect to get. It is perfect in itself, but of course leaves one, as it should, wanting to hear more--everything--of Anderszewski, live or on disk. I can't wait.After watching my NETFLIX disc (surprisingly available so soon after release), I immediately ordered copies to send to my 95-year old former piano teacher in California (who worships Perahia) and several other piano-loving friends. Monsaingeon's Glen Gould film was great, but I think he outdoes himself with "Unquiet Traveler."

I am a professional musician, and I have never been so inspired by a music documentary. Anderszewski is truly a genius for our times, a multi-lingual European who can not only play but expound on the European musical heritage like no one else. His insights into Chopin, Mozart and Brahms are surprising, sometimes radical, always revelatory. He understands the music from the inside out, and conveys this understanding in a riveting, engaging and irresistibly humorous way. His trenchant comments on life at the highest professional levels of music are equally insightful. I've watched this film again and again, and introduced my friends to it. It has the same effect on everyone, and it'll have the same effect on you. If you love music, buy this DVD!

This movie is interesting if only for the scenes of Poland. Otherwise, I wasn't particularly impressed, although the music, of course, is quite good. If you want to see this movie, I suggest you rent it.

I had seen this the documentary on TV and just had to order the DVD. His life story is very compelling and the music and presentation is sooooo relaxing. Another plus is if you're a Classical music neophyte, you'll learn a lot about the genre and composers. Another plus is Piotr is really good-looking. :-) If you enjoy Classical piano and music history, you'll love this DVD.

Wonderful movie - it makes you want to know this marvelous pianist better and attend all his concerts. Wonderful photography, music, landscapes, and insights not only into Anderszewski but also into the places he has lived.

I absolutely love this DVD. Piotr Anderszewski is passionate and he speaks very good English as well as being a wonderful pianist. The scenes of Poland and the travel by train are most enjoyable.I highly recommend it to anyone that adores piano music.

There is little I can add to Dean Brierly's excellent, comprehensive review; I just wish to reiterate how good this film is, so that potential buyers have more than one opinion to go on. I have watched Christopher Nupen's films about Andres Segovia again and again and have always believed it would be hard to better them, but Bruno Monsaingeon manages it with this quite exquisite film about a truly exceptional musician. If you love music, do not hesitate - buy this DVD. It's worth the money just to watch Anderszewski performing the Giga from Bach's first keyboard Partita.

Dieses Video habe ich von einem Freund geliehen bekommen. Es ist für mich als Musikliebhaber eins der schönsten Videos und ich kann es sehr weiterempfehlen. Ich habe es mehrmals bestellt, um es weiter zu verschenken.

Der Doku-Film über Piotr A. ist in jeder Hinsicht sehenswert: Man hat das Gefühl Piotr hautnah zu begleiten auf seiner Konzertreise im Zug. Er zeigt sich nahbar, unverstellt und unverkrampft, sprich natürlich und authentisch. Er lässt den Zuschauer teilhaben auch an sehr persönlichen Gefühlen, Zweifeln, Konflikten.Da er meiner Meinung nach nicht nur einer der besten lebenden Pianisten, sondern auch ein sehr gut aussehender, sympathischer Mann ist, ist es schön, ihm zumindest auf diese Art und Weise nah zu sein....

Un film? non, un document d'exception,un génie que l'on suit à travers la Pologne, document attachant pour mélomanes, ou pour certains qui veulent comprendre la musique, entrer dans ce monde merveilleux d'où on ne sort jamais, où il n'y a pas de lassitude, les morceaux choisis par ce talentueux pianiste sont accessibles à tous par un éventail judicieux , une présence, un charisme, un talent fabuleux, un homme sympathique et plein de sentiments qui aime les gens, il le dit, en un mot, on devrait tourner plus de films qui traceraient le parcours de talents de la musique, du chant, de l'opéra...à voir et revoir pour les accrocs dans mon genre...j'ai beaucoup aimé le passage avec sa grand-mère où l'on peut entrevoir sa chaleur humaine, et aussi les moments qui retracent la souffrance de sa ville Varsovie qui a été défigurée et reconstruite n'importe comment...triste

Parce qu'on peut ressentir l'émotion et l'amour de la musique qui habitent ce virtuose. Il peut nous communiquer ses émotions car on ressent sa joie lorsqu'il joue et ce n'est pas seulement un technicien.

C'est un voyage en Pologne plein de sensibilité et de réalisme et la découverte d'un immense pianiste, slave, sensible,et plein de talentEt puis les films de Bruno Monsaingeon restent des chefs d'oeuvre incontournables pour les amateurs de musique et pour tout le monde

je peux regarder ce dvd en boucle.c'est un instant de grâce avec un homme et un musicien extraordinaire, à découvrir absolument pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas... pour les autres, ils sont certainement comme moi, totalement subjugués...

Ce sont peut-être moins les extraits musicaux interprétés par Anderszewski que ses commentaires, prononcés dans un français impeccable, qui font l'énorme intérêt de ce DVD. Anderszewski nous ouvre la porte de son monde musical à lui, un monde qui n'est pas l'univers un peu aride du pianiste professionnel, mais un monde qui lie la musique à la vie, un monde dans lequel l'amour de la musique devient un thème de réflexion sur la vie et la mort des civilisations. Le pianiste nous confie, parfois avec humour ou un clin d'oeil complice, parfois avec une infinie mélancolie quand il s'agit d'évoquer la destruction de Varsovie, des propos passionnants sur Mozart, sur Chopin, sur Brahms et sur Szymanovski.Un moment inoubliable et tellement enrichissant passé dans les beaux paysages enneigés de Pologne et de Hongrie.

This DVD is one of the poorest I have bought in decades . It is mostly filled with opinions spelled out by Anderszewskiand very little of good music to listen and enjoy .

Je l'ai vu une première fois sur arte lorsqu'il était passé un soir, j'ai noté le nom compliqué de Piotr et j'ai voulu le voir en entier. Depuis, je l'ai revu 3 fois au moins et à chaque fois je découvre de nouvelles émotions, de nouvelles oeuvres, merci Bruno M et surtout Piotr Anderszewski !

J'avait voyé ce documentaire sur le canal Arte et maintenant je l'ai comme un bijou. Anderszewski est un pianist doué et aussi très clair dans son explications. Merci pour ce cadeau!
