How good is this for music production?

It is good and bad. This will h3elp you device your channels etc. Your RAM and Processor will face almost identical stress.

I have an spdif in soundbar, can I also connect powered speakers to the 3.5 jacks for surround?

Sound bar uses center channel for stereo in theory u can fill the other channels with speakers I guess u can.

Normally i believe that money buys quality, but in this case...i don't know jack. so... how does this card compare with the sound blasterx ae-5?

Obviously, I don't have a Sound Blaster AE-5, but I do have a surround sound 5.1 system and bought this card to replace a low-end SoundBlaster card, and it has exceeded my every expectation. For the money, it is worth it all. The software associated with it is solid. I think it is the best sound card that I've ever had.

Does the integrated Toslink connection on the card support 5.1/7.1 surround sound? I know the 3.5mm do from Asus's site.

If you have a recording in 7.1, it will send it out digitally Via the Toslink to your AV receiver. Just remember that this is a line out cable only.
