The Gospel According to Luke: New Testament (New Collegeville Bible Commentary. New Testament; Volume 3)

TL;DR Rushed, doesn't delve, forced points barely any citations, so what is written is the author's ideas alone. Left me with a sense of "I guess" in some areas and "I wish you'd tell me why you said so instead of just saying something their bud"Patella writes a book that seems rushed and that doesn't delve deep. He lists things and chooses examples of ideas but never explains what he's saying and also forces information to back his point. The author also seems to forgo the use of citing other scholars notes on the book of luke and seems to be drawing on this all his own. It is clear that Patella is intelligent with what he does but what he's doing just does not sit well after reading other Luke commentaries. Some of the notes in this book are good to ponder while others again are forced it seems. I recommend Luke Timothy Johnson's "Sacra Pagina, The Gospel of Luke" instead. While Johnson's isn't without his faults either, it produces much deeper explanation and a better collection of information on the Gospel of Luke.I'd really like to point out that when an author writes "Some scholars believe" unless they site someone this is just popular speculation.

A short, very helpful, up-to-date commentary on Luke that would serve the average reader well. It includes the text of the Gospel as it comments on it. It doesn't hurt that it has a beautiful cover.

I enjoyed the background that this series gives to the gospels.

Great condition, fast arrival, great value. It was a very wordy, yet interesting book. It's the kind of book that will make you sleep after reading a few pages. At least, it was for me.

I really like how easy this text is to read. It worked perfect as source for one of my graduate level courses. I recommend this book for anyone wanting to dig deeper into Luke's Gospel.
