Assembled the 8' model with my new size 20 Okuma Epixor XT Spinning reel (also purchased on Amazon) and the balance of the outfit is quite good. IMO, the size 20 reel is the right size for this rod. Used once at on the Chattahoochee river and it was sensitive and handled the stocked trout quite well in fairly swift current. Excellent rod for drift fishing. The 8' model is best for a larger river and when you are able to wade out in the water or have little obstructions on the bank to worry about. The rod is a little more stiff than other UL rods that I have used, but nice bend and action with medium sized stocked trout. Can't wait to hook into a real nice one to really put it to the test. I would definitely purchase again.

Honestly, I have zero complaints. This thing has been great. Everything feels like a monster. Haha. Just took it Snook fishing to laugh at myself while getting smoked but it handled them incredibly well. Even caught a 4.5lb bass with it… I use a 500 sized Kastking zephyr (my go too reel I have 7 from 500-4000) with 6lb braid. If you are looking for a great ultralight I would definitely recommend this one. The 8ft can cast light lures FAR. It’s a little whippy but certainly not a noodle.

Bought this rod early 2021. Really liked it and used it regularly. May 2022 the tip broke while casting a 1/4oz jig. I just trimmed it back a couple inches and added a new tip guide and kept using it. September 2022 the rod breaks again about 2/3 of the way up the blank landing a fish. The warranty only says 30 days but I emailed Berkley customer service anyway. They requested pictures and the receipt and 3 weeks later a brand new one arrived at my house. Awesome!! right ? Used it a couple time and 3rd time out the new replacement breaks between the 4th and 5th guides while casting a 3/8 oz carolina rig. I'm not going to bother contacting Berkely again. Even if they sent me another free replacement rod I have so little confidence in the product I would never use it. Customer service was great but the reviews on this rod proved to be correct. Very prone to breakage which is a shame because I liked the rod and the price was affordable. UPDATE: after the 1st replacement rod broke I did send customer service another email telling them of my utter disappointment. They asked for more pics etc which I never bothered to send but 3 weeks later out of the blue another replacement rod showed at my front door. Although the customer service has been unexpectedly good... the rods just can't be trusted. The brand new 2nd replacement rod will eventually be given away or sold on a garage sale.

I have several Berkley Rods in my arsenal. They all perform very well. The LIghtning is the newest is is very nice, fast taper , very responsive and has a great action. I have caught a couple of black bass and several sandies already. Love it !!

Will do the job

Use it with an okuma baitfeeder and 4 pound mono and it's got great action. Thought it would be too stiff for my liking( I usually like a rod like a wet noodle, soft and buggy whip) but it helped with the cast and I hooked my first white perch and I knew I had a good rod. Might be a new favorite. Has enough arch to keep panfish exciting but enough backbone for catfish and carp (can only lean on them so hard with 4) and the 8 foot length provides enough forgiveness on hard fighting fish.

I have used this rod on several fishing trips to the Rockies and it is now my go to trout fishing rod. Its performance so far has been unmatched and its versatility for different bait or lures, is a game changer. I believe I have four of them now.

I like berkley rods. This one is a perfect 5 weight and balance are as perfect as I have ever used, well built. BUT WHY ARENT THEY MADE IN USA

Very nice rod, perfect for handling smaller fish. First one arrived broken but the second one was perfect. Caught some trout and it performed very well. It is very sensitive so catching smaller fish is very enjoyable. I wouldn't try using it for bigger fish as it most likely wouldn't survive.

Love this rod, bought it as a backup light rod and now it's my primary. Lightweight and yet stiff. Casts great, feels good and responsive.

A great discovery ! The feeling is amazing, I bough the suggested Okuma Reel with it, the best mix ! One of the best price / quality ratio for a trout rod. I’m buying another one for my girlfriend for sure.

First rod I got in shipping was broken in 8 different peace’s...the replacement rod I was given I set up and made one cast with and it snapped. I use many products I buy on amazon and have never had a problem. But I will never again buy a Berkley fishing rod if I’m going to spend $60 on a fishing rod that won’t last more then a day. Very disappointed with this product.
