Next to useless
Despite all these great reviews, I find this no better than my bare hands. It's very thin (thin as t-shirt fabric, less thick than heavy denim) and is smooth on both sides - so it neither grips the lid nor gives good grip for holding onto it. The size is good, yes (for any jar up to, say, a large jar of olives), and it's easy to position but that's irrelevant when it doesn't make difficult jars easier on painful hands! I have an old jar grip that's ridged and doesn't sit flat when you put it down (a low cone shape) which is really useful, and I hoped this being flat wouldn't make a difference - I think if made in a grippier material this would be fine, but as it is it's money wasted.I also have a "jar key" that releases the seal and that is WONDERFUL :) but of course takes more space in the drawer. So I'm back to wide rubber bands round the jar and lid, fiddly getting one to stay round the lid but it does at least help!

Just to be clear: this is FIVE INCHES in diameter!
I almost didn't purchase this because of a review left by an Amazon, Canada, customer on this comment thread which criticises the product for being too small. Well, unless there are different sizes doing the rounds in the UK (where I am) and Canada, all I can say is you'll be doing yourself a favour if you IGNORE that review. With a 5-inch diameter, this little corrugated rubber circle wraps perfectly over the top of jam jars and similar whose average diameter is rarely going to exceed two and a half inches -- I know, I've just checked the various jams and marmalades in our fridge. As to the plastic tops of water and juice bottles etc, as these are considerably smaller than a jar lid, 's no wonder the gripper makes light work of unscrewing 'em.As I am a stroke survivor -- like another reviewer on here -- who has lost much of the strength needed to open jars and bottles, I can honestly say that the gripper has made a significant difference to my day to day life. (Incidentally, I have delayed writing this review until after an extended period of usage, unlike some folks who rush to post on Amazon the instant the product they've purchased has popped through their letterbox.)In extended use, the gripper has worked every time. The UK-ordered product I have does NOT "fit in the palm" of the hand -- as the Canadian reviewer claims -- and it would be a shame if other Amazon customers blithely accepted the criticism made of it. (Of course, if something five inches wide does truly fit comfortably in someone's palm, they're likely to be 8 feet tall and strong enough to open any jar or bottle top with their teeth -- and thus not in need of the assistance this gripper provides). *100% RECOMMENDED*

You didn’t know you needed this
I had one of these that I bought when we lived abroad, but never found a replacement until recently, this is the greatest cheapest “helper” you’ll even have, I have now bought several for friends who have remarked on it

No more meals without pickle
No more meals without pickle. We all think we are strong enough to open a jar. But sometimes the persistent little b will not submit

Brought this to replace an old one.
I didn't like the fact it was smooth on both sides.
