Was able to plug it into my windows 10 computer and recognized as a COM device in Putty.

Works as expected
Needed to have one of these on hand for the rare occasion I need to use a serial connection to something. This adapter was immediately recognized by my computer, and was usable to get into my router’s CLI. I didnt pay attention to the length when I ordered it, and was surprised at how long it was, I was half expecting a six inch adapter dongle type thing, instead I ended up with a full on usb-rs232 serial cable.

I have lab equipment that I need to control with RS232, and with the serial port disappearing from computers, I require these sorts of cables. I've used other, less expensive, cables and chips, but they were not robust and eventually fail. Adapters based on the FTDI chip always work the best and are the most reliable. So far, this one is no different. Simply plugging it in, Plug-n-Play did its thing on my Windows computer, and I was able to use the cable. As easy as a setup as you can imagine. The cord is a little short, but I was already using a USB port hub near the instrument, so I could get the extra length I need using a USB cable instead of a longer serial cable. Very satisfied and recommended.

Bought this item as I've long wanted to be able to have a serial port for random uses on modern computers, none of which tend to have serial ports any longer. I've always had to resort to using specific machines any time I needed to use a serial port. With this I can use virtually any computer for serial-port stuff--great! As far as the research I've done tells me, USB-serial converters using FTDI chips are the best kind to get--most compatible with older software, most reliable, etc. This one indeed has said FTDI-made chip. According to the specs/advertising it should be a FT232RQ chip but I didn't try to crack the case apart to see the actual chip to verify. However I will note the driver Windows automatically uses is v2.12.36.4 and the device hw identifiers are VID_0403 PID_6001, if that helps anyone. One end of the cable is USB-A, while the other is end is RS232--a male port (pins) just as you'd expect to be on an old-skool PC/motherboard with a serial port. A nice feature is the RS232 side lights up blue. This is perhaps unnecessary and doesn't really serve any purpose apart from "looking cool" and telling you it's connected, but I wasn't expecting it as it wasn't shown/advertised as such. A nice little touch. As said Windows automatically uses the aforementioned driver when plugged in. It does so without any fanfare and seems to work fine so far. There seems to be a newer revision driver on FTDI's site--I didn't try it since I don't really think it's necessary. Haven't done too much testing with different software but everything points to this "VCP" (Virtual Com Port) working well. Baud rate (in the driver) is selectable up to 921,600 which I didn't even know serial ports could get up to, but also has the much more common old-skool baud rates selectable. Unlike the other reviewer who didn't note the length and was surprised at "how long it was", I actually did the same but had the opposite experience. I too didn't notice the 1M (~3ft) length but I thought it would be *at least* 6ft. In my case I was kind of hoping it'd replace the serial cable altogether (perhaps with just gender changers and/or null-modem adapters where needed) but this is not the case. Not a huge problem though. These also seem a bit pricey, esp. given the 1M length. The current price is a good bit higher than other FTDI-based similar products, many of them being longer, albeit without the illuminated end (but this is nothing to warrant such an increased price). Apart from those two things, good item that does what it's supposed to.
