Leon Live

If you have so much as an inkling of interest in Leon Russell's solo career, you need to buy this album, like, yesterday. His studio albums are excellent, but in a live setting? Indescribably brilliant. His ability to jump back and forth to different songs without missing a beat is uncanny, and it honestly makes me upset that the punk rock movement of the late '70s essentially killed this level of performing. There's just so much texture to these performances that it's honestly impossible for me to pick any one favorite. I will say this, though: It took me three days of listening to this album to finally move beyond the first two tracks and listen to it in its entirety. Those medleys are KILLER!

His performance, and even the bands performance is at least 5 stars, but the mix is poor enough to make you crazy, especially considering that this is supposedly "remastered". The main problem is the complete lack of low frequency throughout the entire recording. The highs are a bit shrill and at times the background singers are recorded poorly, but this would be reconciled if the sound was rounded out with some bass. I recently purchased the 40th anniversary of "Mad Dogs and Englishman", a recording I've owned on vinyl, cassette, and on CD previously, and the remaster of this was wonderful. It's like I'm hearing it again for the first time. PLEASE please please re-master this recording with care. This is an amazing document of Leon at his early zenith creatively. It's a shame we can't hear it the way it should be heard and remembered.

Okay, it's not a good as I remembered, but I was in my teens. Joe Cocker and Leon Russell were two of my favorites. the fidelity is not a good as I have become used to, but it is live recordings. It is still a fun CD or album.

A good 2 CD set - with a lot of audience noise - which it could do without.Lots of jamming and could use a DVD to better get what's happening. Still if you're a fan - this is a good one to add to your collection.

LEON LIVE is a great live album by Leon Russell, who was truly one of the great live performers and recording artists that 70s rock had to offer. The album features intense concert versions of his best-known songs of the early 70s, as well as some terrific cover versions of songs by other writers. If you buy this CD along with LEON RUSSELL, LEON RUSSELL AND THE SHELTER PEOPLE, CARNEY, and WILL O' THE WISP, you'll have the perfect Leon Russell library.

Although the mix is not the best - rather muddy - as someone who was a virtual Leon groupie (i.e., I attended more of his concerts than I can remember . . . and I was not having artificially induced religious experiences at the time), this definitely captures the energy of his shows. Think Ray Charles on steroids. Amazing.

Great stuff - Leon is missed.

I have now listened to this brilliant concert on vinyl and two CD editions and they are all completely devoid of any "bottom end". Surely the folks responsible for the 2017 CD reissue had access to the technology to rectify this problem which detracts hugely from the listening experience. The best way I've ever heard this music was on the cheap record player I had as a teenager which let me turn the treble to zero and the bass to ten. Sadly the "High End" Hi-Fi I have now has no such controls and the music sounds like it is coming out of a tin can. 5 stars for the music. 1 star for the sound quality.

I bought this as I love 70's live albums as well as those acts who offer something different in terms of rock n roll. I really, really enjoyed this. This is a rock n roll revue dominated by Leon, the man himself. This epic triple album verges from gospel to rock, from Blues to soul. Leon is a fine songwriter, musician and singer. I love his southern drawl, (perhaps I should have said 'mid-west drawl'??). This is by far the best of these style albums i've heard, (comparing it to 'Roadwork' by Edgar Winter's White Trash and 'On tour with Eric Clapton' by Delany + Bonnie + friends). It probably deserves 4.5, yet I rounded up :). For any lover of raw, live records, especially from the golden era of rock, I recommend this. Given I only knew 'Jumpin Jack Flash', I sat through this album in one go and was bouncing along merrily. Good on Leon for recording his rock n roll revival show and for releasing what is probably one of the finer triple albums.

the CDs are a little harsher than the vinyl but Leon at his second best (I think Mad Dogs and Englishmen was his best)....

I always wanted this album when it was first released in 1973. It being a triple album I couldnt afford it at the time! If you heard him on the Bangla Desh Concert ,This is a whole concert of the same style & I am not dissapointedat all .this is a brilliant record of leon at what was probablly his best periodcombining an almost gospel feel in places . what a Great Bandleader he was.Great versions of Alcatraz,Delta lady,Queen of the Roller Derby,Jumpin'jack Flash/Youngblood Medley.I can Highly Reccomend this album along with the albums Leon Russel,Leon Russel & the shelter People & Carney.Praise to Elton John for relighting the flame in a great musicians candle!

A really great live record from the 1970's - for those who love Joe Cocker's "Mad dogs and Englishmen" this will prove a welcome addition. The vibe and energy on show is truely amazing. And this is the remastered edition and the sound is better than on my old vinyl copy. Buy while it's still available

レオンの音を聴いたのはジョージ・ハリスンのバングラディッシュのコンサートだったんですが、その後追っかけで聴いたマッド・ドッグスのライブとかシェルター・ピープルとのアルバムなんかもいいんですが、レオンの絶頂期を刻んでるのは間違いなくこのアルバムでしょうね。ねちっこいのが（いわゆるスワンプ・ロックですが）嫌いな方は多分最初から受け付けないかもですがね。

他のレビュアーの方が大運動会と評しているようにやたらと喧しい。スタジオ盤と違ったよさと言えば聞こえはいいだろうけど個人的にレオンラッセルに元気なロックンロールショーは求めてない。構成的にも一本調子であまりメリハリがついていないので100分以上も聴くのはかなりしんどい

熱い！　これぞレオンラッセルの真骨頂。スワンプロック大運動会だ！レオンラッセルって作曲家としてはカーペンターズのソングフォー・ユーとかマスカレードとかで知られてたけど、それらのバラードも本人のバージョンの方が好きだな〜。ミュージシャンとしては徹頭徹尾スワンプロック！　ロックンローラーだ。デラニー＆ボニー人脈であり、ジョーコッカーのツアーコンダクターやったり。本盤は72年の彼の絶頂期のライブ。バックもベースのカールレイドル（デラニー＆ボニー〜デレク＆ドミノス）をはじめスワンプ系だ。１曲目のマイティークイーンメドレーからトップスピードで突っ走る。最後まで全力疾走で聴いているこちらが眩暈を起こしそうだ。ホーンセクションがいないのになんか熱く黒い。でも白人らしいスピード感。どこから聴いてもスワンプロックにしか聞こえないのは、強烈なリズムとレオンのピアノからくるものか。レオンのちょっと鼻にかかっただみ声で繰り出される強烈なシャウトも格好いい。ジョージハリソンが音頭を取ったバングラデシュコンサートではレオンのジャンピン・ジャック・フラッシュ〜ヤングブラッドメドレーが、明らかに主役のジョージを喰っちゃってて、完全にライブのハイライトになっていたけど、本盤でも同様に既に十八番ともいえるようなパフォーマンスを聞かせてくれる。まあこの曲はバングラデシュの方がキレキレかな。あれはミックジャガーより格好いいだろ！何と言ってもハイライトは後半のDELTA LADYとスピードアップして演奏されるボブディランのカバーIts All Over Now Baby Blueだ。Delta Ladyのテンションは半端ではない。現在の若いロックファンには知られていないライブの名盤！　おススメです！！最新リマスターで再発希望！！！90年代に同じの買って持ってた（未リマスターかと思ってた）のに、新リマスターと勘違いして再度購入してしまった自分的には残念なアルバム。。。

レオン・ラッセルのライブ盤。のりのりの逸品です。実は、レオン・ラッセルの大フアンから「レコードは持っていますが、ＣＤも欲しいから、お願い」と頼まれての購入でした。感想は「大満足！」とのことです。

ある意味彼こそ黄金の70年代ロックのアイコンではあるまいか。それにしても、このジャケは最高だ。私は当時大好きだったジョージ・ハリソンやジェシ・エド・デイヴィス経由で彼の音楽に辿りついた。レオンの美声とは言いがたい独特のだみ声と、ファンキーかつ繊細なメロディ、そして一度観たら忘れられない不敵な面構えは、一生頭に残ることだろう。多種多様な音楽的要素（特にＲ＆Ｂ、ゴスペル、カントリー）を大胆に摂取し、ソウルフルにまとめ上げた「スワンプ・ロック」とは彼の音楽の代名詞であろう。レオンの粘っこいコシのあるヴォーカルとファンキーかつオシャレなピアノ、そして分厚いゴスペル風コーラス隊がゴージャスにして、暑苦しくて素晴らしい。一度ハマると病み付きになるそして、一緒に踊り出したくなるサウンドである。それにしてもストーンズのカバー（「ジャンピング・ジャック・フラッシュ」）がこれほどサマになるアーチストって彼以外にいるのだろうか。同時代のエドガー・ウインターの「ロードワーク」（１９７２年）と並ぶ、ソウルフルなロックの大名盤！今聴いてもかなりアクの強いアーチストだ。70年代初頭のロックの黄金時代の濃いサウンドがここにある。今こんな冷めたファンキーな人いないよなあ。

ロックは70年代を最盛期として以後は衰退している気がする。現代のようにロックがメジャー化、グローバル化、一般化してしまっては、ロック本来のパワーは失われた。『レオン・ライブ』は、まだ少数だった感性の鋭いファンを熱狂させた、ロック本来のエネルギーに満ち溢れた70年代を象徴するようなアルバムだ。3枚組だったLP日本版の解説で今野雄二は、このアルバムを聴き終わった後には「まるでレオンとセックスしたみたいだ」と誰もが思うだろう、と書いていたが、まさに熱気、興奮、昇天！現代は非常に便利な時代で、ネットを使えば簡単にCDの試聴ができるので、レオンの音楽性がどうのこうのと言うまでもなく、ネットで試聴すれば即座に自分にとって好きか嫌いか判明する。だからこんな野暮な解説めいたレビューなど無用なのだが。LP日本版の解説には山本安見氏の歌詞全曲の日本語訳が付いていて、興味深かった。当時、山本氏はレコード各社のロック担当者に会い、レコードにロックの歌詞の日本語訳を付けるように説得して回られたそうだが、山本氏の尽力にもかかわらず、今に至っても、ロックのDVDに歌詞の日本語訳の字幕が出るものは極めて少ない。より深くロックを味わい感じ取るためにも、歌詞の日本語訳は重要だと思うが。
