Anne Hathaway Is Wonderful!
Iconic comedy about the cutthroat fashion industry and its ruthless editors.Director David Frankel’s comedy-drama The Devil Wears Prada (2006) is now a comfort movie for me. It has searing satire of the judgemental and mean spirited fashion designers, editors, secretaries, and models in the fashion world, while also respecting how difficult and chaotic that world is for the unfortunate enough to be employed there. Frankel’s direction balances the fast paced witty humor with sincere and blunt drama that gets to the heart of fashion industry elites being selfish snobs.Cinematographer Florian Ballhaus uses all these striking wide shots of models and assistants in chic outfits from costume designer Patricia Fields. I love the close-up shots for anytime a character gets real in a captivating monologue about the importance of fashion. Editor Mark Livolsi swiftly cuts montages of running menial tasks, trying on designer clothes, or attending high fashion runway shows. The Devil Wears Prada is a tight 109 minutes of fun and insight. The Devil Wears Prada is fantastically adapted by writer Aline Brosh McKenna from author Lauren Weisberger’s novel about her real time as Anna Wintour’s assistant. McKenna’s jokes are clever and her words about the importance of high fashion that gets transformed into the average person’s daily wear in Miranda’s big speech is very smart. She crafts a nice romance in the midst of cutthroat fashionistas and it is fascinating. It is a hilarious comedy and a touching drama about choosing what you want to do for a living that will make you enough money to live, while being able to live with yourself. Never change your personality for a job, even if you have to style up your wardrobe for a career.Anne Hathaway is adorably sweet as the fashion clueless assistant Andrea Sachs. Hathaway is gorgeous and charming as the innocent heroine of The Devil Wears Prada. Hathaway is completely lovable even when she starts to become a fashionable snob herself because Anne makes Andrea feel real and sympathetic. She looks so beautiful in her brunette hair and bangs with all these chic black dresses, skirts, and blouses. Her comedic chops show real natural skill and Hathaway’s dramatic prowess knows no bounds. Anne Hathaway can do no wrong for me. She’s a wonderful heroine in The Devil Wears Prada in one of her greatest performances. She gives Andrea that moral compass and authentic personality.Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, who is inspired by infamous Vogue editor Miranda Priestly. Streep is outstanding as Miranda with needlessly cruel demands, rude behavior, entitled attitude, and opinionated fashion remarks. It is like Meryl Streep was born to portray the wicked fashion editor in all her misery, high fashion pretentiousness, and selfishness. Her monologue about the need and glory of high fashion to demean Hathaway’s Andrea is a compelling dramatic speech. She is an iconic villainess in The Devil Wears Prada.Emily Blunt as the delightfully snobbish secretary Emily Charlton, who is like Rachel McAdams’ Regina George from Mean Girls down to her getting hit by a car. She is even similar to Judy Greer’s mean character in 13 Going on 30. I like how she is almost nice in the end. Blunt’s character Emily is one of my favorite roles from her. Emily Blunt looks fabulous in all her high fashion outfits and stunning red hair here. Make-up artists J. Roy Helland, Maya Hardinge, and Evelyne Noraz give blunt the prettiest black eyeliner and lovely blue eyeshadow.Stanley Tucci is nice and empathetic as the honest friend to Andrea named Nigel Kipling. He is a fashionable, gay editor much like Andy Serkis’ supporting character in 13 Going on 30. I love how he takes Andrea under his wing in a display of kindness. Simon Baker is excellent as the sleazy writer Christian Thompson with his shady ulterior motives. Adrian Grenier is great as Andrea’s unsupportive boyfriend Nate Cooper the chef. He just complains and is not really supportive at all. Gisele Bündchen is fun as the judgmental employee Serena. Everyone else is so mean to Anne Hathaway it is perfectly infuriating. Stéphanie Szostak is pretty and shrewd as Jacqueline Follet. Heidi Klum gets a quick cameo during Paris Fashion Week.Production designer Jess Gonchor creates realistic Runway fashion magazine offices and runway events in sleek sets. Anne Seibel and Tom Warren’s art direction makes everything look modern and chic. Lydia Marks fills sets with decorative paintings and fashion illustrations to dozens of clothing sets. Composer Theodore Shapiro brings a warm and playful melody to his film score. The Devil Wears Prada has a very fun soundtrack full of contemporary pop hits.In all, The Devil Wears Prada works as a poignant dramatic critique of the fashion obsessed, shallow, selfish mean girls as well as a hilarious comedy in its own right. Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Meryl Streep astonish me every time I watch The Devil Wears Prada.

Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci, and Emily Blunt make up for the movie's shortcomings!
The only good things about this movie are: Meryl Streep's and her quotable zingers, Stanley Tucci, Emily Blunt's breakout performance, the clothes, the Madonna songs/fashion montages, and Anne Hathaway's performance as Andrea Sachs...that's about it. If the movie could somehow have made sense without Andy's pouty boyfriend (Adrian Greiner as a struggling sous chef who can't seem to find a hairbrush) and her shallow, hypocritical "friends" (they LOVE the free gifts she brings from Runway but turn on her viciously when she begins to don couture in her efforts to do the best job possible in her "pay your dues" turn as an abused assistant to the tyrannical Miranda Priestly), it would have been better. Andy's "friends" don't seem to understand that she has taken this thankless, low-paying, and often humiliating job (which is also TEMPORARY) because it will open countless doors for her to pursue her real career goals. True friends wouldn't (or shouldn't) be so vicious and hyper-judgmental when one of their own needs them most (like when they're working in a thankless, low-paying, and often humiliating job for an evil boss). Still, watch it for Meryl, Stanley and Emily if nothing else!

a really good movie ...
Well, this movie was an education: first of all it is based upon a very real person whom courtesy forbids naming - a viciously abusive individual who is notorious, very famous and very successful. This movie tells the story of a smart small-town girl who makes it her mission and life to wrestle the world of high fashion to the mat, and then stomp on it: she succeeds. During the course of the year she works for a magazine which is a stand-in for "Vogue," she changes completely, loses a very old friend and makes one new one, ditches her soul and then comes back to get it. I don't think this movie could be made today: we're too politically correct now and this character would be faulted for her character, which proves itself strong in the end, and her standards, which are high and to which she finally returns. But I value it for these very reasons. (Watch for a cameo appearance from 'gorgeous Gisele!')
