I would have to charge my dead battery outside. Could I hook this up and then leave in the engine bay with the hood closed while charging?

I have done that very thing for years. I have never had an issue..! I leave a battery tender hooked up 24 hours a day on my Motorcycle.

for how long do i leave it connected to the batterie

As long as you want. It won’t over charge the battery. It’s intended for vehicles that sit a lot to keep the battery maintained. I leave my Harley hooked up until I decide to ride.

Does this thing make any noise? From either a fan or buzzing/humming?

I haven't heard any noise and it doesn't have a fan.
