great collection
Haven't tried to play the movies yes, so I don't know the quality of the DVD, but if it doesn't play I'll returnit. But it is the right movies at the right price, so I'll definitely enjoy it if the discs work.

lots of great musicals in an inexpensive collection
I especially like the films featuring stars like Rita Hayworth, Fred Astaire and Betty Grable. The one where Rita Hayworth was a goddess of song and dance who came down to earth to play in a musical about herself was great. It was called Down to Earth. You'll never get rich with Rita and Fred was also great, and also Tonight and Every night with Rita and Janet Blair. Three for the Show was a great screwball comedy with Betty Grable and Jack Lemmon. It had lots of elaborate dance scenes, as well as a comedy of errors. Another film, You can't run away from it with Jack Lemmon and June Allyson was a remake of It happened one night, a great comedy romance with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. Tje remake was in color, and it used a lot of the plot and dialogue from the original, but was not nearly as good. And it was not a musical, really. I only recall one song. Probably there were no others. My Sister Eileen with Janet Leigh and Jack Lemmon was an amusing musical with good songs. A Song to Remember was more a life of Chopin and also not really a musical. The 5000 fingers of Dr. T was a quirky fantasy by Doctor Seuss and not really a musical. It starred Tommy Rettig, whom I watched in Lassie as a child. I liked him as the first owner of Lassie on TV, so this film is nostalgic. Ii am still watching other films here, perhaps I can add to this review later. Overall it was a good buy for the price and the interesting and often entertaining films.

Eclectic collection unearths some rare gems - a great value
This collection is a great value - 20 Columbia Pictures films (licensed by Mill Creek), for a price you might easily pay for just one or two films. Despite the "format" listing as "full screen," most of the films that were originally released in widescreen formats are presented here in widescreen (the exceptions are YOU CAN'T RUN AWAY FROM IT and THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T). The picture and sound quality are very good, although not particularly enhanced for the digital age. As for the films themselves, "eclectic" doesn't even begin to capture the range of pictures here, and "musical" in some cases is a bit of a stretch as a description. But that range is one of the delights of this set - from the B picture Western BONANZA TOWN to one of Betty Grable's last films (THREE FOR THE SHOW) to the above-mentioned oddity 5,000 FINGERS and Oscar nominee A SONG TO REMEMBER, there is something for most classic movie buffs to savor. Jack Lemmon and Rita Hayworth fans will be especially pleased, as they are well-represented. There is even a feature (TIME OUT FOR RHYTHM) with considerable screen time for the Three Stooges in their heyday. Thanks, Mill Creek! Let's hope this collection will be successful enough to prompt more "20 Movie" grab bags of films that might otherwise never see the light of day.

Whole Lotta Movies Going On
Great variety of Columbia musicals presented in a good quality picture. Rita Hayworth is one of the featured stars; Mae West is in one; Jane Russell, Jack Lemmon, Tony Martin, Fred Astaire, Betty Grable, Marge and Gower, Janet Leigh, Cornell Wilde, Jose Ferrer, Ann Miller, Rudy Vallee, June Allison, Dorothy Lamour, and Three Stooges are also onscreen. Many types of musicals are covered: classics (MISS SADIE THOMPSON); rock n roll (ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK & an odd one with Anthony Newley); YOU CAN'T RUN AWAY FROM IT, a musical remake of IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT; biography of Chopin; big band; one for the kids in the unusual THE 5000 FINGERS OF DR. T; and even 2 inconsequential westerns with music. No bonus features but the movies, many in color, speak for themselves and are a delight. Big bang for the buck. Mill Creek, you outdid yourself with these underseen musicals from the past.

Loaded with great dancers and great songs
Really nice to see Rita Hayworth out dance Fred Astaire! And see rock around the clock with Bill Haley and his Comets. Sort of the start of rock and roll. Slightly French shows how versatile Dorothy Lamour was as an actress and a dancer/singer. Very entertaining.

With 20 films,
you'd think there would be a few at least worth the money. Well, you'd be right! However, to call some of these musicals is a stretch! But there are a few worth the price of admission! RP

Good value collection for fans of old musicals
This was a gift for my husband who loves the high quality dancing and singing of old movies. He said that is is a mixed bag, with some "oddities", but some of the films are unexpectedly good. He particularly liked "Rock around the clock", which he had never seen before.
