It is very detailed and complete in it's analysis and review of many classic rimfire rifles. There is almost nothing to criticize about this book, other than the length. It should be at least twice as long with at least twice as many review subjects. It may not have every classic the reader hopes for, the Winchester 190 my mom and dad gave me almost 50 years ago wasn't included in this volume. What it does have is well written coverage of many fine rifles most readers will never have the pleasure of owning. Other than a few typos this is a perfect work on the subject matter covered. Fully recommended. Review: Good book - Very informative for us old school 22 lovers! I suggest getting Walnut and Steel II together for a complete model review.

Excellent read for what it is.
I liked the information that was printed. Very informative. The omitted disassembly and reassembly instructions were disappointing but what was provided was very good.

excellent read
very enjoyable and informative. the author did a fantastic job writing about and researching this topic. he obviously has a great deal of hands on experience in the care and feeding of vintage 22's. he did a masterful job of relating this knowledge to the reader in a way that makes it interesting to anyone that has any level of interest in classic old guns. this is a must read for anyone who has ever thought of purchasing and using a vintage 22 rifle. his passion for these pieces of american history is obvious and definitely contagious. i am very glad that i read this book even though i now want go find and buy one of these classics myself.

It contains the very best reviews of the Winchester 9422 and Marlin 39 lever ...
Well written and thoughtful, the book is organized by manufacturer and reviews many classic rimfire rifles. It contains the very best reviews of the Winchester 9422 and Marlin 39 lever action rifles. The author includes some background and history for each manufacturer. There is advice on when to restore/not restore a rifle and small game hunting considerations. I enjoyed reading it and I highly recommend it.

Very nice book insults reader
The book is nicely printed and very well-bound. Mr. Ward does warn us that your favorite "vintage" .22 rifle may not be in this book. Fair enough. I could not find an actual definition of "vintage .22 rifle," nor could I find any mention of the Ruger 10/22 introduced in 1964, but a there is a nice review of the Winchester 9422 announced in 1972. Thing is, you have to buy the book and flip around through it to find anything because there is NO table of contents. Unbelievable but true. No glossary? OK. No index? Fine, that's a lot of work. But NO Table of Contents!? Ridiculous. I would have thought that even a subsidy publisher would have a sense of professionalism and hope for the author. Aren't successful authors good for business? Where were Mr. Ward's friends? Didn't anyone try to help him? Only three stars and it could have been an easy five. No table of contents is a slap in the face. This author's attitude grates on my nerves. This book could make America grate again.

Buy This Book!
Buy this book! If you appreciate beautiful .22 rifles, this is a book you will read and re-read many times. Author Bill Ward's love and respect for vintage American .22's is evident throughout. Not only does this book make for interesting reading, as far as I can tell, it is also and accurate reference source for information on vintage rimfire rifles. I bought the Kindle version. It's also available in hardcover and paperback. I hope to also buy one of those versions soon. Highly Recommended.

The book was well written, in readable language. Well balanced and fair descriptions of the older classic .22's. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the author's experiences.

The scope is limited to those .22 firearms from several major producers, that made such firearms as per the title, in walnut and steel. These are largely older designs from yester-year. Most modern production is aim at reduced costs, using synthetics and mouldings/CNC manufacture. While such modern designs are quite functional, they lack charm and appeal, to create pride of ownership. But that itself may be a commentary of modern life. I enjoyed this book very much, which took me down memory lane. I am fortunate having owned or currently owning many of the models listed.

Good descriptions on a select few models which serves as a good intorduction to others staring to collect or just wanting to read and learn about classic 22's.
