Are they extra firm or firm?

Its extra firm, the highest they do.

i am decent sized 14, would i be better with 12-14? or 16-18?

hi, The Spanx are designed to be a close fitting garment to help with control and support. However, while this is important you do not want to be uncomfortable wearing the item so I would suggest the 16-18 as this will still give you support but will give that extra bit of comfort.

I’m a 10-12. Which size is most likely to be right?

Hello, I would recommend going for the size 12

What is the 40 measurement please? Is that bust or waist size?

Hello there — it's the waist size, since these are _shorts_, not a full-body garment.
