I bought this garbage truck set for my 5-year-old grandson, and it has been a wonderful surprise for his pre-k graduation. Even though the recommended age is 8 and up, he has been doing a fantastic job putting it together with very little help. It's been amazing to watch him work through the instructions, figure out where each piece belongs and feel proud of himself as the truck takes shape. The set has a nice number of pieces to keep kids engaged without being overwhelming. It provides just the right amount of challenge and keeps little builders interested from start to finish. My grandson stayed focused for long stretches of time because he was excited to see the truck come together piece by piece. Like all LEGO sets, the quality is excellent. The pieces fit together well, the semi-finished truck feels sturdy and stable. The bright colors make it even more appealing to kids. He was excited from the moment he opened the box and has spent hours building, rebuilding, and playing with it. What I love most is that it offers more than just entertainment. It helps him develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination as he connects the pieces, while also encouraging problem-solving, patience, concentration and critical thinking. It's fun to see him challenge himself and gain confidence as he completes each section on his own. Once built, the truck is durable enough for plenty of imaginative play. He loves pretending he's collecting recycling and driving around on important jobs. For the amount of time, enjoyment, and learning it provides, I think it's an excellent value for the money. This has easily been one of his favorite gifts, and I would happily purchase another set like this in the future.

This LEGO Technic Mack LR Electric Garbage Truck (42167) is a total hit with my 9-year-old who’s obsessed with trucks! The 177-piece build took about an hour and was challenging enough to keep them engaged without frustration—love the realistic details like the electric motor, hydraulic lift, and that cool gripper arm that grabs the bins for "recycling" play. Once assembled, it’s super sturdy and rolls smoothly, sparking endless pretend scenarios where my kid "collects" toys as garbage—great for teaching about eco-stuff too. At $49.99, it’s an incredible value for the functions and play potential, and it’s durable enough for rough kid handling. Only minor gripe? The instructions could use a bit more color coding for the gears, but that’s nitpicking. Perfect gift for 8+ kids who love vehicles—highly recommend for some quality father-son build time!

This set is fun to build and easy. Its really cool that it picks up the garbage can and is just like a real garbage truck. It is in scale with the Speed Champions sets also from what i can tell. I would buy this again if i needed a gift. Totally a nostalgic purchase since i always wanted something like this as a kid.

This Lego kit is really nice and it actually picks up the little garbage pails and dumped them into the truck, it even comes with little garbage pieces. I like it so much that I already ordered one for my son last Christmas so we exchange it for a different set, but this one is really cool.

Really one of the best lego investments when it comes to money : time occupied. My 8yr old has been building it for about 4 hrs off and on (my fault because I told him I'd handle the sticker placement, yes I'm a perfectionist, I collect legos myself and crooked sticker placement gives me the heeby jeebies). So sometimes he had to wait on me to put stickers on. Other than that it's kept him fully occupied. Should also add that he has very pronounced adhd and for him to sit with something and focus for this long is not a frequent occurrence. I think I helped out twice to correct something that was placed incorrectly and got him stuck, but generally speaking I would say this is definitely appropriately labeled as for 8yr olds. He really enjoyed it. What I also love about this set specifically and why I ended up choosing this above other technic sets is the moving parts. It's more interactive, so more likely to receive some play time after being built. Really neat set, great price, kid (8 yrs) approved. Would 100% recommend.

This 503-piece set is highly detailed and lives up to expectations regarding design and parts fit. The packaging lists the age range as 8+, but it ended up being an excellent fit for a 7-year-old who has some basic experience with building kits. The assembly process is straightforward, and the instructions keep the project manageable without causing frustration during the build phase. The functional design of the truck is where the set really shines. The side loader mechanism works smoothly to grab, lift, and tip the trash cans directly into the back cargo area. The cabin doors actually open to show the inside layout, and the entire structure is durable enough to stay together during regular play sessions instead of falling apart when handled. The main layout compromise involves the steering element on top of the driver's cab. The gear piece used to turn the wheels is quite small and low-profile, which makes it a little awkward to twist comfortably during tight turns. Additionally, the small pieces used for the trash can easily scatter across the floor if kids tip the loader mechanism a bit too aggressively. Playability is excellent.

Gave this as early Christmas present.. my 7 year old was very excited and made it in less than two days!! It's MANUAL has detailed step by step instructions of 132 pages. If you loose the manual you can always go to lego website and find it! It's definitely better than a toy dump truck as the child is EXCITED to learn the INTERACTIVE MECHANICS of how the liver, hydraulic system , push and pull mechanism of lifting the garbage box works. Kids get so excited to explain what they learnt while building it. Can see the sparkls in their eyes when we say "WOW or COOL" when they explain the process of how they built it.
