Best Knife I Have
This is an awesome knife! This knife if just the right size. I was worried about it being too small but I actually love the size. I have the larger 6.5" Shun Nakiri but for me it is a bit large and heavy for most jobs. I am 6'1", 210 lbs so it's not that I can't handle the larger knife but this one feels much better in my hand and it is more nimble. With the 6.5" version, it does its job very well but I am always aware that I am holding a knife in my hand. With this knife, the 5" version, it is more like it is an extension of my hand. It is Very Sharp, Very Beautiful and Simply the Best at what it was designed to do. I have a 5.5" Shun Santoku that I probably use a little more than this 5" Nakiri but the two of them are my go to knives. Couldn't be happier, Couldn't recommend it more highly.

Sharp!
This is the sharpest knife I have ever used. I really love it. Light, well balanced. 5.5" is a bit short for some of the items I want to cut with it. The small size makes it really easy to use. This is my first Japanese knife. My Cutco were sharp when new but nothing like this thing! I can slice the softest items like over ripe tomatoes. I think if I had better skills I could peal a crape with it. We shall see now long the edge holds up. It's my understanding these have a very steep edge and the steel has to be strong to handle this steep angle. So far I love it. Time will tell how well it holds up. Oh I noticed something else. We like shredded lettuce which is hard to do with a knife for a novice. I can cut the head of lettuce up super thin with this. I also noticed the lettuce can store longer before the edges start to get brown. I mentioned this to a chef friend. He said this is because the lettuce is being cut instead of ripped. His point was rip up some lettuce by hand and cut some with a knife. The ripped lettuce will turn brown sooner. Same thing happens with the sharpness of the knife. I performed a test with my Cutco and this knife. The results, the Cutco sliced lettuce turned brown before the lettuce cut with the Shun. From my research Shun seemed to offer the best product for the price. There are supposedly better knives out there but I am not willing to spend the extra $ on those. I think I got the best product for the price and product line is extensive to keep the knives matching each other.

My favorite knife!
This is the one knife I’ve been missing, out of all that I use. I can handle a chef’s knife just fine, until I have one of those days when arthritis acts up in my hands. Until now, I have been wishing for an easier way to do prep work in my kitchen, not realizing I needed a different knife blade for the work I’ve been doing. This Shun Nakiri knife is smaller than my Chef’s knife, meaning it is lighter in weight, and the blade being thinner means I don’t have to shove as much knife through my vegetables. Instead now, the blade glides through like butter. I wondered if I would like the shorter 5-inch knife as I am used to a longer blade; I do like it as my hands are small. The shape of the knife feels safer and more efficient to me, and I can easily get through a pile of veg. This particular knife seemed like the budget choice as the longer Nakiri’s are quite a bit more, but I am glad I made a choice to try it.

5” Nakiri.
At a hundred bucks, this knife feels like double if not triple the price due to the quality. It’s balanced perfectly, incredibly sharp out of the box and overall a stunning knife to work with. Shun knives always are.If I had to make criticisms they are very small, the handle isn’t a symmetrical oval as it’s designed to ergonomically be right handed and the blade is purposely off center for the same reason. You will only minorly notice this if you are using the blade left handed, right handed it’s extremely ergonomic especially on smaller hands. The Damascus pattern isn’t as contrasting as the photo would lend, which doesn’t bother me at all it’s just an observation I had. If I could change anything about it I would love to have this same knife in 6in, but that is just a personal preference. Easily one of the best and modern classic looking Nakiri ever made.

Great knife, but a tad short
I have a full set of Shun Classic knives, but didn't have a Nakiri for vegetables. I saw this at a good price and jumped at it. It is sharp and extremely well-made, like all Shuns. But I wish I'd opted for the 6.5" model for only $14 more. This looks a bit short. But for most veggies I think it will be fine. I'm not returning it. I'll post an update here if I find it too short in actual use. BTW, Consumer Reports rates Shun Classics as the best knife for professional use. I agree.

My favourite knife right now, out of 20 others.
i seem to be collecting high quality knives and have over 20, with 5-6 Shun knives (as well as those that i have given as gifts). This knife has risen to the top of my choice for many tasks. Of most usefulness is the flat point which also serves as a gather tool for small diced veg. I like this so much, i sent one to my best friend as a gift.

Quality and balance
Excellent higher quality knife for cutting jobs that require finesse, a sharp fine edge and great balance. The 5" blade may limit the size of what you want to cut and its not a heavy duty commercial style chopper. Also a light honing will keep edge razor sharp.
